A PASSING OF A PIONEER
Death of Mrs Peter Wilson

On the 13th instant word was received by relatives that Mrs. P Wilson had passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W Prentice, near Lismore. Deceased had reached the great age of 85 years. Mrs. Wilson was widely known and revered in this district, where she resided for a great number of years and experienced all the discomforts and hardships of the early settlers. Her first husband, Mr. Joshua Sawtell, was an Englishman, and the pair were married at Dapto, the birthplace of the deceased. From there they came to Nerrigundah, where Mr. Sawtell engaged in the work of the gold seeker. From thence they went to Bega district and worked a dairy at Jellat Jellat for the late Mr. Gowing. Afterwards Mr. and Mrs Sawtell, some 46 years ago removed to Wandella, their selection being part of the property now owned by Mr Harry Tarlington. Here Mrs. Sawtell was bereft of her husband. Some years later she married Mr. P Wilson, the issue being one son Matt, now resident of Marrickville, and a returned soldier. Later in life, Mr and Mrs Wilson removed to Cobargo, and for a time engaged in storekeeping, eventually selling out and living in retirement, until they removed to Marrickville, where Mr Wilson passed away some four years ago at a wonderful old age. They were a fine old couple, the stepsons and stepdaughters having a strong affection for him who was a Grand Old Man to them, as he was to this district. He prominently associated himself with Agricultural Society, the School of Arts, public movements, and particularly those of a charitable character. Both Mr. and Mrs Wilson were devoted adherents of the Church of England, and a sheet anchor to the Rector of their day. They kept a hospitable home, surrounded by an atmosphere of cheerfulness and content. The demise of Mrs Wilson will be regretted right throughout the district, where she was held in very high esteem. The issue of her first marriage was four sons and four daughters, two of the latter having predeceased her. The surviving sons are Messrs Jos, Tom, Harry, and Alf, daughters, Mrs W McKenzie (Qld), and Mrs W Prentice (Richmond River). Mr. Josh. Sawtell resides near Lismore and Mr. Alf Sawtell on the Dorrigo, while Messrs Thos. and Harry are well known farmers in this district.
