The first son was named JAMES for his father and baptised 11 Dec 1796 at Stoke Damerel near Plymouth. On 23 Mar 1822 at St Leonard's Exeter, he married Elizabeth MORSE and was only 35 when he died at Clifton Place in St Sidwell, on 25 Feb 1832 leaving Bess with three sons and three daughters, the youngest of whom was only four months old. Apparently James and Bessie spent their entire married life in the parish of St Sidwell as all their children were baptised there.
The first child Charles Leonard 06 May 1823 only lived a little more than 11 years, dying in Oct 1834. Only a baptismal date of 24 Jun 1824 is known about the second son Alfred John. The eldest girl Ellen Sarah 23 Feb 1826 carne to Australia with her Uncle George's family in 1853. The Mooltan passenger list shows SARAH Elworthy, aged 23, arriving in Victoria on 02 Aug 1853 but doesn't show ELLEN (maybe she preferred her second name), yet we know Ellen came to Australia. All that is known of Sarah Elizabeth is her baptismal date of 06 Feb 1828. Asenath 29 ApI 1829, also arrived down under aboard the Mooltan. As quite a lot is known about the families of Ellen and Asenath, further details will be given later. The last child of James and Bessie was also called James Elworthy and baptised 10 Oct 1831. Civil registration began a few years later and nothing further carne to light about him. |
