James E Madigan (son of the above John Madigan) was born at the Queen's Arms Hotel. In 1879 he married the third daughter of Henry Hilton who had held the offices of Postmaster, schoolteacher, Chief Constable and other duties at Tumut.
James Madigan held the licence of the hotel during his lifetime. He was a successful breeder of some good racehorses, the best of which Was "Carenaught", winner of the " Ascot Thousand" in 1914. James Madigan was Mayor of Tumut in 1904 and 1905'and again in 1912. On, 10 August 1904 Mrs. Madigan, as Mayoress, cut the ribbon at the opening of the new bridge over the Tumut River at the foot of Wynyard Street. |
