The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser (NSW : 1868 - 1931) Sat 10 Oct 1868
l have to report a melancholy and fatal accident that occurred on Wednesday to Mr. Henry Fosberry, farmer, of Tumut Plain. Mr. Fosberry, having taken up a selection a little above West Blowering, came into town with a dray and obtained the loan of Mr.Foord's flat-bottomed boat to convey his furniture across the river. Having brought the boat to the river and launched it, Mr. Fosberry sent the lad who was assisting him on an errand, and proceeded to work the boat across by means of two ropes fastened to either bank, although he had been advised to adopt a different plan. The boat being loosed from its moorings was at once borne down by the strong current, and Mr. Fosberry in leaning over the side to haul in the heavy, wet rope, slipped into the river. The unfortunate man, who was apparently unable to swim, after struggling in the water only a few feet from the opposite bank for a minute or so, was borne down by the current towards some rocks where the boat was found in the evening. Mr. Bowden, who witnessed this scene from the opposite bank, ran as fast as his age would permit for assistance, but before it could be procured the deceased had sunk. The police and neighbours are this (Thursday) morning grappling for the body of the unfortunate man who left town the day before full of strength and life. Mr. Fosberry was a well-to-do farmer, and much respected by all who knew him. [A telegram informs us that the body was recovered on Thursday evening.] |
