OBITUARY
MR. HENRY WILKINSON
As briefly recorded in our last issue, death claimed a son of a Tumut district pioneer at the Tumut and District Hos pital on Wednesday night last, in the person of Hr. Henry George William Wilkinson, of Yellowin. Deceased, who was 82 years of age, had always enjoyed excellent health and was 'strong as a lion,' despite his advanced years. He suffered practically no illness during his lifetime until a week prior to his demise. He was admitted to hospital on the previous Sunday suffering from internal haemorrhage. Little hope was held for his recovery and his family was summoned to his bedside.
The subject of this obituary was the sixth child and the fourth son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wilkinson of Yellowin, where he was born. We will transgress a little to give a brief history of the arrival of the first of the Wilkinsons to that locality. In 1838 John and Thomas Wilkinson arrived in Tumut. They had settled at Gundaroo with their father in 1831, but in 1838, owing to disagreements with their step mother, they decided to strike out for themselves and, with 80 head of cattle as a parting gift, they arrived on the Gilmore and camped on what is now known as '"Rosebank''. They remained in this camp for over a year, and on applying for a squatter's licence they were given ''Yellowin," to which place they moved in 1839. When the Wilkinsons arrived in Tumut John was 17 and Thomas 14 years of age — another instance of heroic make-up of the bygone generation. Both built homes at Yellowin. In 1847 John married Elizabeth McAlister, the first white child born in the district, and in 1851 Thomas married Susannah Bridle, whose father then owned Talbingo. Thomas continued to reside at Yellowin, the property being still in the hands of the Wilkinson family, while John moved to Springfield.
Mr. Henry Wilkinson, son of the former, received his early education by private tuition at Yellowin and after wards attended the old Tumut Public School in Fitzroy-Street, Tumut, under Mr. Bax. On the completion of his education he assisted his father on the property until early in 1884, when he secured a position as overseer on "Gournama" Station, Warialda, where he remained for five years. Incidentally, "Gournama" was the original home of the famous Rangers' Valley Hereford herd, so well known in this district.
Deceased returned to Yellowin in 1889 and took up a selection on the original Yellowin run on the opposite side of the Tumut River. He also acquired the lease of considerable mounttain country on both sides of the river and went into cattle raising on a fairly large scale.
On the death of his father in 1904, he acquired portion of the latter's estate on both sides of the river and adjoining the property on which he was residing. He also leased property from the late Michael Donoghue and Alf. Duffy at Gocup, which he used as winter country for his cattle.
In the year 1899 the late Mr. Wilkinson married Miss Sarah Wilkins, Granville, and he built his home on the site where his father had originally set tled 60 years previously.
Besides the widow, a family of five sons and one daughter survives, viz. Alan (Wee Jasper), Geoff. (Talbingo Road- side), D'Arcy (Yellowin), Richard (Sydney), Mac (Yellowin) and Margery (Mrs. H. Whittle, Sydney).
There are two brothers, Alfred (Tumut) and Phillip (Yellowin), also surviving. Brothers and sisters deceased are John, Thomas, William, Herbert, Sid, Margaret (Mrs. E. J. Bridle) and Martha (Mrs. W. A. Lampe).
Six years ago Mr. Wilkinson retired from active work, selling his property, opposite Talbingo, to Mr. W. Matchett and leasing the one adjoining his residence to his sons, D'Arcy and Mac. He was one of the most experienced cattle men in the district and working them seemed to be his hobby. He was of a quiet disposition and did not take part in district public affairs. He was a lover of the Hereford breed of cattle, which he acquired as the result of his experience among the strain at Gournama and Rangers' Valley.
The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon last, leaving from the resid ence of Mr. Alfred Wilkinson after a short service conducted by Rev. A. Brown (Presbyterian) in the absence of the C. of E. rector, Rev. S. Broadfoot, for the C. of E. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery, where interment took place. The pall-bearers were the five sons, Messrs. Alan, Geoff, D'Arcy, Richard and Mac Wilkinson, and Mr. Harry Whittle (son-in-law).
