Son of David and Mary Ann Married Christina Ann Hazlett in 1883 at Gundagai with 10 children born of this union. The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers' Adviser (NSW : 1903 - 1925) Tue 10 Mar 1908 Death of Mr Henry James Wilson. The earth rings hollow from below and warns us of its dead. Quite a leaden pall was thrust upon the town on Thursday last when the sad news was circulated that the subject of our obituary had "gone to his fathers." The hale, the hearty, the jolly one at show time, in town on the 29th Ultimo, called away, without even an opportunity of saying goodbye. It appears that on the 1st instant, having partaken of a hearty lunch, he was invited to try some grapes, which he ate with relish, but shortly afterwards complained of great pain at the base of his abdomen. He accordingly sought medical aid, and Dr Mason, we hear, diagnosed the case to be one of appendicitis, and advised his immediate removal to Sydney for treatment (Dr Browne being away). On his arrival it was found that an operation was imperative, and accordingly it was performed by Dr. M'Cormack, who discovered that an abscess had also formed above the appendix and had burst, making the case a complicated one. Mrs. Wilson left for Sydney the next day, but while on the journey her husband succumbed. His age was 49 years. The deceased was the elder son of the late highly-respected and worthy old gentleman, Mr David Wilson, who later, assisted by his worthy partner, Mr John Edward Ritchie, introduced their quartz crushing plant on the Adelong Creek, the most up-to-date gold saving appliances available in the State. The whole family were highly and deservedly respected, and our departed one was singular in his originality, his general adaptability to overcome apparent obstacles, and he proved his ability by the fusing of his ideas into a concrete and workable plan. About 26 years ago he married Miss Hazlett, and the outcome of their marriage was three sons and five daughters. For some time he lived on his late father's property on the Gilmore, and apart from grazing and agricultural pursuits he took a deep interest in mining, and was always willing to aid a syndicate he deemed deserving of support. Later he purchased that well-known property on Bombowlee Creek, known as "Binimbula" (the aboriginal term for " the road to Heaven.") For some time he managed the property, effected large improvements, and finally sold out to the present holder, Mrs Nestor, of the Woolpack Hotel, who since has leased it to Mr Charles Smith (late of Yeerong Creek). Subsequently he purchased 45 acres, being Portion 60, Parish Mondongo, and County Buccleuch. He worked this for a time and subsequently sold out. He then purchased that desirable property on " Dog Trap Creek," adjacent to the Rosebank holding, and recently owned and ocoupied by the late Mr James Deans. On this holding he has effected extensive improvements, and his last idea was the purchase of an irrigation pumping plant from Mr A. B. Feltus at our last show. Our departed friend always aimed at progression. There was not a lazy bone in his body. Early and late he was always a hard worker. One of nature's gentlemen, he always appreciated the hands of the " Sons of toil" and, where known to him, none ever approached him for a favor in vain. It can be said of him: " he lived as he died." Under any and all circumstances he proved himself a man. He was a worthy husband and father and his aim was " to leave the world better than he found it." In politics he always took a stand and his arguments in general proved irrefutable. But, alas ! The past is gone; " Life's dream is o'er" and happier mansions, we trust, are open to receive him. He leaves behind him 4 sons (Messrs Robert, David, Jack and Allen) and daughters (Misses Eva, Olive, Molly and a baby) together with a sorrow-stricken wife to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and fond and loving father. The remains of the departed left Sydney by Friday night's train and Mr H W Hoad conveyed them on Saturday to the Presbyterian portion of the old cemetery. The coffin was of polished oak, with suitable appointments. A very large cortege of mourners paid their last tribute of respect to the departed, and Rev.R E Davies officiated at the grave. When the assemblage left there was not a dry eye visible, which speaks for the esteem in which the deceased was held. We join with the public in deepest condolence over the sudden departure. |
