Hugh Read (1838–1894) was born in 1838 in the village of Tintinhull, England, to Joseph Read (1801?-1857) who was married in 1821 to Maria Watts (1800?-1853). Joseph and Maria Read had nine children between 1821 and 1844, and two - maybe three - of their sons migrated to Australia - George, Hugh and possibly Joseph. The boys had three cousins – Henry, John and Elizabeth – living in Sydney.

George (1828–1907) arrived on the 'Emma Eugenia' in 1849 and married Mary Casey (1835–1910). They had eleven children and lived near Sutton/Gundaroo.

A third son is thought to have also emigrated – possibly Joseph. Lyall Gillespie recorded that there were rumours he met a violent death, either in a fire or killed by aborigines, but no details are known

Hugh arrived on the 'Golconda' in 1857, described as "a labourer, 18, from Tintinhull, Somerset, could not read or write". Samuel Shumack wrote : "Hugh came to Canberra around 1856 and worked for Joseph Shumack, who was later the licensee of the Canberra Inn". Shumack describes Hugh Read as a 'rough diamond [who] at times would be carried beyond reason by an ungovernable temper' (p.58)

Hugh and his brother George purchased land near Spring Flat, Tallagandra in 1859, at a land sale in Queanbeyan: George – portion 10 (Lot 24) of 81 acres, and Hugh – portion 11 (Lot 25) of 40 acres 2 Roods. The land was described as : "..... well suited for agricultural purposes. There is very little surface water, but it may be obtained by sinking. They are open forests, timbered chiefly with gum, apple and box. The rocks are schist and quartz." Hugh erected a dwelling and lived on this land for several years. He later left it in trust for his daughter, Ethel Walmsley, and it was known as 'Tintinhull', after their English village.

In 1862, at St John's church, Hugh married the sister of Joseph Shumack, his employer - Eliza (Elizabeth) Shumack (1840–1907). Eliza was born in 1840 in Castletown Berehaven, Cork, Munster, to John (1810-1849) and Margaret Shumack [nee O'Toole] (1809-1879) in 1835 in Castletown. John and Margaret, Eliza and her brother Joseph and her uncles Peter and Joseph, had arrived in Australia on the ship 'Lascar' in 1841. Hugh and Eliza had a family of ten children [see Family Group Sheet]

According to Lea-Scarlett Hugh and Eliza 'settled about a mile from his brother along the Sutton-Tallagandra Road near where Back Creek crosses the road'. Hugh progressively acquired more land and he established his lifelong home, 'Wattle Grove'. Not far from 'Wattle Grove', between Back Creek and its tributary Spring Flat Creek, in 1859 brother George had purchased three small blocks of land, totalling 181 acres, which formed the foundations of his 'Spring Flat' estate.

Hugh engaged in farming and grazing pursuits and appears to have been very successful. At some point he also purchased 500 acres at Naas from Thomas Gregory.

Hugh and Eliza had ten children:

Mary Maria (1863-1891) married John SHUMACK in 1882 and they lived at Round Hill, now Mt Painter, and had six children.
Margaret (1864-1949) married Richard MALONEY (son of Robin and Mary Maloney of Ainslie) and they farmed at 'Hillside' Ainslie and had nine children.
Rebecca (1867-1947) married John GREGORY (son of the Duntroon miller) in 1886 and farmed at Naas and had ten children.
John Reid (1868-1917) married Ellen MALONEY, (sister of Richard Maloney) and purchased the old Canberra Inn from Joseph Shumack and used it as their home – 'The Pines'. They had six children.
Sarah Anne (1870-1929) married Charles MCKEAHNIE and farmed at 'Wattle Valley' near Wells Station and had seven children.
George (1872-1947) married Florence Eveline FISHER and had eight children.
Hugh Jnr (1874-1930) married Ethel FIELD and lived at 'Oak Hill', Sutton and had nine children.
Joseph (1877-1941) married May Maria CARTWRIGHT and farmed at 'Wattle Grove', Sutton and had nine children.
Emily Eliza (1879-1941) married Charles LUCAS and lived at 'Somerset', Tallagandra and had one child.
Ethel (1885-1965) married Robert Alfred WALMSLEY and inherited 'Tintinhull' from Hugh. They had four children and later moved to Grenfell.
Hugh Read died on September 2 1894 at 'Wattle Grove', Sutton aged 56 years.
Eliza died in1907 and was buried beside Hugh, and also with son John (husband of Ellen Maloney) and daughter Margaret (wife of Richard) Maloney.
