John Kendall left home in England about 1876 and sailed to New Zealand. In about 1882 he sought a drier climate and began work for his uncle James H E Kendall who had a farm near Germanton. In about 1884 John was granted land south of The Rock called "Flowerpot Hill" which he sold in 1901 and purchased "Miarb" just north of The Rock.
