Personal Notes:
A book was published after his death at his request on his life in the British while serving in India. While in India he wrote letters on behalf of one of his army friends (who was not able to write) to this person's family who lived in West Wycombe Bucks. A niece, Emma Plumridge of W.Wycombe would then respond to the letters on behalf of her uncles family.Thus a friendship was formed between Emma Plumridge and John Cooke. Upon John Cooke's return to England in 1866 and his discharge from the British Army he went immediately to West Wycombe to meet Emma. They were married there shortly after in Sept. 1866. John & Emma Cooke after their marriage travelled to Devon to see John's parents. They returned to London and John joined the London Metropolitan Police. He had led quite a "wild" life in the army (drinking) but he had changed his life by joining the Temperance Society and by giving his life to God. He took part in the worship services and his baritone voice could be heard above all others while singing. While on duty in the Police force in London he could be found standing on a soap box preaching to the people in the city square!. Emma's family had been very involved in the Methodist Church in the Wycombe area. Her father, Wm. Plumridge and grandfather James were Bible study leaders and they use to preach on the Wycombe circuit. John Cooke was offered the position of Lay Agent to the British Seamen's Institute in Boulogne, France around 1868. He went there to live with his wife and young son Wilfred, (b. Jul 1867). Emma 's health was not strong and after the birth and death of a daughter in the spring of 1871, she did not recover and died 12 Oct. 1871. John's health was also not good. He suffered badly with head aches and very bad hearing. He had been an artillery gunner while in India. After his wife's death his own health became worse. He returned to London in the fall of 1872 from Boulgne, France for an operation. He did not recover and died 26 Dec 1872 at age 38 yrs. Thus Wilfred was left an orphan at age 5 and a half. He was raised in a George Mueller Orphanage in Glouscestshire. I believe that Emma Cooke was buried in France and that John Cooke in London England. He gave his Journals on his death bed to the person who gave him the Lay Agents job and asked that they be published.Their is a copy of this book in the Guild Hall Library in London, England.
