(From a Correspondent.)
QUITE a gloom was cast over the district on Wednesday, when it became known that Mr. John O'Neill had been found dead. On Monday Mr. O'Neill was in Nimitybelle in his usual health, he having come to town the funeral of the late old Mr. John Farrell. He left after dark to go to his home, about five miles from town. As he did not reach his place at the expected time, his family became uneasy. A search party was formed, and on Tuesday night, about 11 o'clock, the unfortunate gentleman was found dead close to the residence of Mr. Thomas Geraghty, and only a mile from his own home. The late Mr. O'Neill came to Manaro about 25 years ago, and settled down at Nimitybelle, where he resided up to the time of his death. The deceased was married, and leaves a widow and large family of sons and daughters. He was well known throughout the whole of the district, and greatly respected on account of his honesty, industry, and sobriety. In fact, I might say of him as Longfellow did of the Blacksmith: " He looked the whole world in the face, for he owes no man." What makes the occurrence more sad is that Mrs. O'Neill was away at the time, she having gone to Bermagui to visit her daughter. By his death we have lost one of a class of men that we can ill spare. He will also be missed among the members of the Roman Catholic community, as he was a prominent layman of that body in this district.
