Personal Notes:

John Seward Large, born in Melbourne in 1842, gained some fleeting fame as reported in a Sydney paper of 07 Jul1868 ...
"A pair of handsome birds were recently shot by Mr J Large of Tumut. They are the first of the kind to be seen in the neighbourhood and are of a somewhat rare sort, but one species only being known in Australia and belonging to the class of AVOCETS which form the genus Recurvirostra of Linnaeus so named from the extraordinary curvature of the bill which distinguishes them from all other birds, the mandibles of which resemble strips of whalebone. The specimen in question
(known to ornithologists as R. Rubricollis) approximates closely, according to the correspondent of the Gundagai Times, to the American bird of this species."
In Feb 1861 in company with the police magistrate and two others, John was travelling to Blowering when they were caught in a huge storm which did tremendous damage in half an hour. When the horses bolted in fright, one man injured his shoulder, another his head - and the third took off for Blowering Hotel! John's horse was a very large animal and while huge hailstones measuring from 6" to 8.5" blanketed the ground, he showed great presence of mind by sheltering underneath the horse.
It is quite likely John had a property somewhere in the district as he was charged with taking 1000 improperly-branded lambs from Tumut to Gundagai (being less than 40 miles and the animals not having strayed) in March 1869. John's defence was that the brand had washed off because they had crossed so many creeks. Travelling six miles every day, he had not had time to rebrand them. The less-than-impressed magistrate fined him one penny per head with 3/6 costs.
In his younger days John had been an auctioneer in Tumut and was 44 when he wed Emily Vine WHITE, daughter of Emmeline nee LEVETT and Stephen White of 'Merrybindinyah', Bethungra. He was described as a grazier of Cootamundra. The marriage took place on 23 Nov 1886 at the home of the bride's parents and produced three girls and four boys. John died on 11 Sep 1923 and Emily on 14 Mar 1935. Both are buried alongside his mother Mary Ann, at Cootamundra Cemetery.
