Joseph Ward Senior probably had a relationship with Isabella Barnes, and Joseph 'Cooma Joe' Ward was apparently the child of that relationship, and is it presumed Ann Uren raised him.
In 1832 Joseph and Samuel Bowler occupied Wambrook Station. He would drove cattle to Sydney and on the return trip carried supplies for a store owned by himself and his brother-in-law James Kirwan. Joseph and James had a falling out over the fact that Joseph did not want James to bring Eliza (his sister) to the Monaro district at that stage, and they split up the partnership and James opened an inn in Cooma. In 1839 Joseph brought his family to the Monaro district and moved from Wambrook Station to Bridle Creek Station near Coolringdon. He didn't stay there long and moved to Rock Flat just south of Cooma where he operated an inn. Ann died here in 1843. Joseph had several other hotels including the one presently called "The Australian" in Cooma. A plaque on the wall bears his name and date, 1858. Joseph was issued with a publican's licence for races to be held at Tea Tree Flat on the 20th, 21st and 22nd March 1855, the licence being operative from 6am till 10 on each day. On the 15th January 1857, Joseph obtained a licence to slaughter cattle in his stockyard at Cooma. 20th April 1858. Publican's licence granted to Joseph Ward - "The Graziers' Inn". 18th April 1859.
