DEATH OF MR. JOSEPH EMBLEM.

Mr. Joseph Emblen, a resident of the Wagga district for half a century, died at the residence of his eldest son, Mr. W. J. Emblen, Wattle Vale, Book Book, on Tuesday last, at the age of 80 years. Born at Westbury, Wiltshire, England, 28th October, 1828, the late Mr. Emblen arrived in Sydney in the sailing ship Emma Eugenie in 1849, and settled in Hartley, where he married in 1852.

Subsequently he removed to Mudgee. He left Mudgee in 1859, and arriving in Wagga in the same year, commenced business in Gurwood-street as a black-smith in company with his brother. He remained in Wagga and district ever since, though during late years he has seldom been seen in Wagga owing to advancing years.

Three sons and two daughters survive him, viz, William Joseph, of Book Book; George, residing at Multaburra, Queensland ; Robert, Town Clerk, Wagga, Catherine (Sister Mary Patrick), Eubiaca Convent, Parramatta; and Mrs. E. Wright, of Collie. Western Australia.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the body being brought to Wagga for interment in the Anglican portion of the cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev. G. A. Carver. The late Mr. Emblen was the pioneer of the Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows in this district. Having been a member of the Loyal Sovereign Lodge, Mudgee, prior to taking up his residence in Wagga Wagga, his love for the order and its principles induced him to exert himself to establish a lodge here.

His efforts were crowned with success, and on the 23rd February, 1863, the Loyal Southern Star Lodge was started, Mr. Emblen being the first member to sign the new roll, and was also elected the first N.G . ln common with most other new lodges, its fortunes were for some time precarious, the vicissitudes natural to the community and period militated very much against a strong lodge and on more than one occasion it came very nearly to a collapse. But owing to the energy, zeal and perseverance of the late Bro. Emblen and his colleagues the lodge survived and Bro. Emblen lived to see a membership of over 300.

For some years past he had through ill health and other causes ceased to take an active part in the work of the lodge and although practically unknown to many of the younger generation of Oddfellows, the news of his death was received with deep regret. His funeral, which took place yesterday was attended by a number of the members of the lodge, the pall-bearers being six of the Past Grands of the lodge, viz., Bros. C. Rake. J. Cox, J. Spies. E. Miles, A.Rake, R. Miller.
