The bombing was accurate but the force was engaged by fighters. 463 Sq lost P/O Carter and crew: 7 KIA; and F/O Webb and crew: 7 KIA." http://www.467463raafsquadrons.com/L02Pgs/diary02.htm The crew of F/L N.E Webb's crew lists W/O L. Harrison as the Wireless Operator. This was that crew's 24th mission. Address by Wing Commander (R’td) Rollo Kingsford-Smith DSO AM DFC at the unveiling of the Memorial Plaque on 2nd Sept. 1997 in honour of the men of Nos 467 and 463 RAAF Squadrons, who gave their lives in World War II. “467 Squadron first, and then 463 began combat operations in 1943 and continued in the front line of attack without a break until victory came in Europe. It was a story of courage and determination but there was a price to be paid. In less than three years of combat these two squadrons with an average combined air crew strength of only about 350 to 370 men lost over 1,100. They were killed by enemy action, taken prisoner or killed over England by our other enemy the weather. Their commanding officers took their share. Seven were brought down by enemy action. Only two survived long enough to complete a tour of operations. Night after night young men — most in their early twenties — flew their Lancasters deep into enemy territory and night after night some failed to return. Squadron losses of 28% in one raid, 35% in one month were reached. Monthly losses of 25% of squadron strength were common. Yet morale remained high. While their main targets were deep in the heart of Nazi Germany the long range and striking power of their Lancasters took them wherever German military conquests had spread. In the North to Norway, to the far Eastern parts of Europe and to Africa in the South. Many still lie in unknown graves over this vast territory. Like the Anzacs, who are here remembered, their sacrifices were made far from home. Little is known of them these days. But it is time they were known and remembered. So it is my privilege to unveil this plaque in their honour.” |
