Leicester Charles Wrixon Attwater came into the world on 10 Mar 1904 at Grafton. That year Marlene Dietrich was born and Anton Chekhov died; work began on the Panama Canal; Sydney streets were lit by electricity - and a woman was arrested in New York for smoking a cigarette in public!
By the age of 16 he had left home, working as a jackaroo in various NSW towns. At St Matthew's, Manly on 27 Feb 1929 he married Mary Purvis DRUITI and had three children, all born at Manly, NSW.
Leicester bought a property Glenward at Barrington Tops, then moved to a dairy farm four miles from Gloucester when the war started. He joined the Army, became a driving instructor and taught recruits to drive the large Army trucks.
Mary ran the farm and raised turkeys for the Red Cross. Later they lived on a cattle property near Grafton, then at Glenroc, Gunnedah, which was subsequently taken over by their son Brian and his wife Helen.
From photographs, Leicester was a very handsome man. He seemed to have inherited the Elworthy genes and looked rather like a slimmer version of his Uncle Arthur from Gundagai. In their later years, Leicester and Mary retired to Woodford and Leicester died there on 14 Aug 1972. Mary then moved down to Beecroft, a suburb of Sydney, where she died on 04 April 1979.
