Personal Notes:
Matthew Hamilton came to Australia from Scotland with his wife, Margaret, and two children between 1854 and 1856. Another child was born in Sydney where family folk lore alleges Matthew worked as a stone mason helping to build the Sydney GPO. The family moved to Adelong to go gold mining but records show he also worked there as a stone mason. Another eight children were added to the family before they moved to take up land at Illabo in 1874. Matthew was well-respected in the district and his property Rose Vale is still held by the Hamilton family and many of his descendants are farming in the local area.
