Son of Patrick and Mary Arrived in the colony in 1860 Married Anne Mary Quilty in 1866 at Tumut with 11 children born of this union. Occupation : J. P. Coroner, Magistrate and Storekeeper Excerpt From Freeman's Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1850 - 1932) Sat 16 May 1896 DEATH OF MR. MARTIN TUOHY, J.P, (From Our Tumut Correspondent.) I have to record with very deep regret the death of our highly-esteemed fellow-townsman, Mr. Martin Tuohy, which took place in Tumut on Friday morning. But our sorrow is nothing to that of his widow and children, eight in number. One son, W. E. Tuohy, is in Messrs. V. Emanuel and Frazer's, solicitors, office, Tumut, and a daughter (Sister Mary Vincent) is a Sister of Mercy in the Yass Convent. The other members of the family are at home, Three of them are attending the Catholic school. The deceased retained his senses until the very last moment, and called each member of his family by name, to say the last sad good-bye. Rev. Father Donnelly attended him in his last illness and administered the last Sacraments. The Rev. Father O'Dwyer was with him when he died, and said the last prayers. The funeral procession was one of the largest ever seen in Tumut. The coffin was borne to the grave by Messrs. William Tuohy, E. Brennan, T. Quilty, and J. M'Cormack. Mr. W. Tuohy, of Randwick, brother of deceased, was one of the chief mourners. Just thirty years ago, Mr. Tuohy married Miss A. M. Quilty, daughter of thp late Mr. Thomas Quilty, of the Gilmore, by whom he had eleven children, three of whom pre-deceased him, and eight survive, viz., live sons and three daughters, who, with their widowed mother, are left to mourn their loss. |
