Personal Notes:
Mary Anne Bale was the daughter of Samuel Hammond Bale (1853-1923) and Jane Kinsela (1864-1912). Her father was from Barnstaple in England and at one time ran a cinema in Gundagai. His middle name is from his mother’s maiden name. Her mother was from Australian and Irish stock from a family with the surnames Dudley and Mehegan.
Mary’s brother Henry Guildford “Harry” Bale (1891-1915) landed at Gallipoli on Anzac Day as part of the 8th Battalion. He was killed 4 months later on the 27 August the day after his 24th Birthday. He is buried in Shrapnel Valley. He also has a headstone at North Gundagai Cemetery. Another William George Bale (1888-1950) also fought in WW1 and even enlisted in WW2 before he decided he was too old at age 56 years.

Mary was born in Queanbeyan, NSW in 1895. She worked in various hospitals mainly doing cooking.

According to her son George she suffered from diabetes and had her toe nails cut by a chiropodist. On one visit the chiropodist cut too deep and gangrene developed and she died 23 August 1959 in Liverpool Hospital, NSW and is buried at Rookwood. She shares her grave with her eldest daughter Ella Jane Glasscock and son in law Bill Reading. On grave searches her name is misspelt as Mary Anne Glassock.
