Personal Notes:
Parramatta Chronicle 20 Jan 1844
“IMMIGRANTS BY THE HERALD.
The immigrants by the Herald are still on board waiting engagements. From information we have received the poor people have been greatly deceived by the im migration agents at home. Some engagements had been made, but, we have reason to believe, not to the extent represented by one or two of the Sydney papers.
The small sum of £70;000 will be required to pay the bounties of these deluded people, and where, the money is to come from is a mystery, the solution of which seems to have engaged the attention of the "Metropotitan Press" for the first time, notwithstanding they have been "moving heaven and earth" for months past, amid all the destitution prevalent in Sydney, and consequent on a want of employment for the labouring classes, to promote the very desideratum they have now so much reason to deplore.”
