Personal Notes:
Melancholy Accident near Berridale.
A Mercury, Thursday, March 30, 1893
Mother and Child Drowned.
News was received in Cooma on Wednesday of a melancholy drowning accident at Little Plain, near Coolamatong, by which a well-known and highly respected resident, Mrs Primmer, and one of her daughters, were drowned. It appears that the little girl, six years of age, and her elder sister went to a water-hole on the selection in front of the house - a pool whose depth never seems to have been suspected. The younger child, in playing about, fell in, and though her sister tried to drag her out, it must have been quickly drowned. The sister, naturally failed to realise the full danger, or even that the child was probably then beyond rescue, ran to the house and told her mother of what had occurred. The poor woman at once rushed to the waterhole in a distracted state, and not finding any trace of her child body, began a wild search in the water reckless of consequences to herself. Suddenly she got beyond her depth, and as she was unable to swim she too was drowned. There was no help nigh at the time, Mr. Primmer being absent from home delivering wheat in Cooma. Later on Mr. George Tasker and a nephew of Mrs. Primmer called at the house, and from the information gathered from the children they went to the creek. Here they made a search and found the bodies of the mother and child at the bottom of the waterhole. Our correspondent at Berridale writes that quite a gloom has been cast over the community by the sad affair, for Mrs. Primmer was well known and highly esteemed. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Owen Lynch of Bulgundra. She leaves a widower and a large family of young children, who have thus been suddenly bereft, and left to mourn their irreparable loss. A magisterial inquiry will be held by Mr. Love, P.M. and Coroner, on Saturday, as Mr. Hepburn, Coroner for the District, is away. An order for burial was given, however, and the funeral took place today (Thursday). It was largely attended by sympathizers from far and near.
