Gippsland Times 3 Aug 1925
DEATH OF MAJOR A, J. ARNOTT,
It was with extreme regret that officers and men of the 13th (Gippsland) Light Horse Regiment learnt on Friday of the death of their Commander, Major Albert James Arnott. The deceased, who was a bridge contractor, was engaged on work at Healesville when he received a fatal blow on the head. The deceased had constructed many bridges for the Government, including one at Boolarra and Bunyip. The late Major Arnott was a resident of Trafalgar, and was a most capable and popular officer. He joined the 13th (Gippsland) Light Horse Regiment at Thorpdale in 1904, and having served, through all the various ranks, was appointed to the command of the regiment in 1924. The deceased served throughout the whole period of the war as a gunner in the Field Artillery He was 50 years of age, and leaves a widow, two sons and three daughters. Two sons are members of the regiment, one serving as a sergeant and the other as a pay corporal at Trafalgar.
The funeral, which took place at Yarragon on Friday, was a large and representative one, 70 cars being in attendance. Lieut. W. S. T. Robinson, Captain Vinnicombe, Q.M.S. Burrell, Lieut. O'Connell, Warrant Officers Widdicombe and Stewart attended from Sale, and Captain Stewart from Stratford. Major W. A. Dunlop represented General Tivey C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., V.D. The body was brought to Trafalgar by train and interred in the Yarragon cemetery. The deceased was accorded full military honors. There were 40 members of the Regiment from which a firing party was drawn. A Masonic service was also conducted at the graveside. Deep sympathy is evinced for the bereaved family.
