DEATHS.
BARRETT.-March 10, at Nyngan, Claude Thomas, dearly loved son of T. and A. Barrett.

Cobar Herald 16 March 1909
Nyngan Bathing Fatality.
DIVED IN SHALLOW WATER.
The death occurred on Wednesday morning, of Claude Barrett, a well-known local resident. The circumstances surrounding the death are very sad. On Sunday afternoon last a number of people were bathing in the swimming hole in the Bogan, when deceased came down and dived into the water where it was only about three feet deep. He did not rise immediately, but others in the water did not suspect that there was anything wrong until he had been in the water some minutes. Fearing he had met with an accident, a couple of young men went to his assistance, when they found that he was unconscious. The unfortunate young man was carried out to the bank, where first aid was rendered, and after some time animation was restored, but he was unable to move a limb. Dr. Day was quickly on the scene, and ordered the patient's removal to his home. An examination revealed that deceased was paralysed. There is little doubt that in diving his head struck the bottom, presumably with some force, straining the muscles of the neck and causing irreparable injury to the spinal cord, producing paralysis. Not the slightest hope was held out for his recovery, and he passed away peacefully on Wednesday. The accident was terribly sudden, and was a great shock to the young man's friends. He was only 28 years of age. Universal sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Barrett and family in their sad bereavement. — Nyngan 'Observer.'

PIONEER NYNGANITE DEAD.
Mr. Thomas Barrett, aged 75 years,
and for 33 years a resident of Nyngan,
died last week. There was no town
where the capital of the Bogan now
stands when Mr. Barrett and his young
wife pioneered there. Soon they were
established in the best hotel in the far
west, and square dealings and good
business tactics, together with an ever-
increasing popularity, set the tide of
prosperity flowing steadily in on them.
In a few years they were possessed of
a big share of worldly wealth—quite
enough to retire with plenty, but the
town had been good to them, and they
decided to play their innings out there.
And Mr. Barrett was really kind to
Nyngan. He was the first man to set
the pace at building on substantial
lines, and with the utmost regard to
architectural beauty. Now a pile of
buildings stands as a memorial to his
loyalty to Nyngan and his pride in the
old town. Peace to his ashes—he was
a good man—and sympathy with Mrs.
Barrett and the four sons—Bert., Har-
ley, Clive and Roy—and Mrs. P. S. An-
till, daughter.

Windsor and Richmond Gazette 24 Sept 1920
DEATH OF MR. J. E. KIDD.
We take from the "Molong Express" of
Saturday week, the following account of
the death of a brother of Mr. George Kidd,
of Windsor:—
Yet another of the old residents of this
district has gone to his eternal rest, in the
person of Mr. John Edward Kidd, who
passed away at Cudal on Saturday last, at
the age of 86 years. He was possessed of
an iron constitution, and was in robust
health, which enabled him to swing a heavy
hammer at his trade as a blacksmith, till
he attained the advanced age, for such a
feat, of 82 years. From that time up till
about two months ago deceased enjoyed
fairly good health, and his illness at first
was not severe enough to compel him to
remain constantly in bed till about a week
before death occurred. The immediate
cause of death was heart failure, superven-
ing upon senile decay. During his illness
he received all the attention and medical
skill a loving family could provide, and thus
his last days were spent as comfortably as
possible. He passed away peacefully in the
presence of his attentive nurse and daugh-
ter, Mrs. Wood, and his grandchild, Mrs.
H. Dean. All the members of his family
visited him during his last hours. A native
of England, the deceased gentleman arrived
in Australia when four years of age, with
his parents, who settled down at Richmond,
Hawkesbury River. He was apprenticed as
a blacksmith to Mr. W. Biddle at Rich-
mond, and subsequently he became the
chief smith in the forge of the late Andrew
Town, who was noted in the Hawkesbury
district as the owner of the famous sires,
Grand Flaneur, Tarragon, Tim Whiffler,
Childe Harold, Maribyrnong, Cheviot, and
King Tom. In due course deceased was at-
tracted by gold discoveries to The Ovens
diggings, and later, about 40 years ago, he
arrived at Manildra, and engaged in his
trade there. While at Manildra he exe-
cuted all the pile shoeing for the traffic-
bridge. Deceased next returned to Rich-
mond for a short period, and then removed
to Cudal, about 32 years ago settling down
there at his trade, with his son Jack. He
continued in that business actively till about
four years before his death, when he re-
tired, and resided with his daughter, Mrs.
W. Wood. Deceased married Miss Mary
Ann Matthews, of Prospect, who prede-
ceased him about 37 years ago. The issue
of the marriage was a family of 16, seven
of whom are still living, viz.: Mesdames T.
Barrett (Nyngan), W. King (Canbelego)
and W. Wood (Cudal), Messrs. Harry
(Bumberry), John (Cudal), George (Orange)
and Richard Kidd (Mendooran). Deceased
had 30 grandchildren. His youngest brother,
Mr. G. J. C. Kidd, is a resident of Wind-
sor. The late Mr. Kidd was of a quiet and
retiring disposition, and did not take an
active part in public affairs; but he had a
wide circle of friends, who were deeply at-
tached to him and appreciated his many
good qualities. His character was above
reproach, and the Cudal district is the
poorer by his demise. He was fondly loved
by his family, being an indulgent father and
faithful friend.
