Daily Mercury (Mackay) 9 Dec 1932
OBITUARY.
ALEXANDER; GRANT, Sen.
Another of the grand old pioneer
residents of Mackay, and one of its
best known residents, in the person
of Mr. Alexander Grant, senior, pass
ed peacefully away at 7 o'clock yes
terday morning at the residence of
his son, Mr. A. Grant. Deceased had
been an invalid for two years and had
been confined to his bed for the last
six months. Up to a little over two
years ago deceased had taken an
active interest in his business and had
visited the shop daily. Possessed of a
robust constitution, he had worked
to the last and relinquished his active
ies only when his physical powers
were exhausted by weight of years.
The late Mr. Grant was born at
Grantown, Strathspey (Scotland) , in
1851, and was therefore 81 years of
age. He came out in the "Light
Brigade,'' a sailing vessel, and reach
ed Mackay in 1872. Messrs. E. Den
man, D. Dunne, and the Warry family,
and other old residents were amongst
his shipmates. Leaving the ship at
Rockhampton, where he landed in
February, 1872, deceased shortly after
came north. He had booked his ticket
to Charters Towers, but the boat's
time-table allowed it to remain a
few days here and, thinking, he would
like to see one of the sugar mills,
he walked to Meadowlands, which
was operating at that time, and while
there was offered work, which he de
cited to accept. He returned to
town and collected his luggage and
worked for a short time about the
mill as a carpenter.' He was next
seized with a desire to follow the
then prevailing trek to the Palmer
goldfields, and set out with a man
named William Lobie. Things were
not what they seemed in the far
North, the conditions generally were
rough, and the blacks were trouble-
some and Mr. Grant and his mate
decided to return to Cooktown. They
did not like Cooktown any better
than the goldfields, and a further
decision was made in favor of Mac
kay. Work was readily offering
here, and deceased worked for a
number of years at different places
as a carpenter and joiner and started
a shop about 1880, acquiring the pro
perty in Victoria-street where the
present business is situated and has
been carried on since that time.
Mr. Grant was of a musical and
literary turn of mind and read a
great deal. He took a great interest
in music and was band-master of
the first band in Mackay. At that
time the performers were keen and
eager to learn. The practices were
held regularly in the workshop and
good progress was made. For a time,
deceased was at the head of a dra
matic club, which successfully staged
the comic opera, 'Pianofore' deceas
ed being the producer. For a short
time also, he was choirmaster at
the Church of England. Generally
speaking, Mr. Grant did not take
much interest in public affairs. His
inclinations did not tend that way. He
preferred to be with his books. He
never allowed himself to lose contact
with the Gaelic language, and was a
frequent contributor to the Press,
Gaelic translations, more particularly
poetry, being amongst his favorite
themes. For many years he was an
active member of the Presbyterian
Church and one of the elders. He
also was superintendent of the Sun
day school for a time. As might be
expected, Mr. Grant kept in touch
with the early Caledonian Association.
He also was a member of the old
Irish constitution of the Masonic lodge
which some years ago was incor
porated with one of the other lodges.
The Protestant Alliance claims de
ceased as one of its old members.
Deceased's wife died about 11
years ago, the surviving members, of
the family being Mr. Alex. Grant
(Mackay), Mrs. Vestergaard (Bris
bane), Mrs. Norris (Dalby), Mr. G.
Grant (Cooroy), and Dr. Robert
Grant (Mackay). One son, Jack,
was killed in France. Two. sisters,
Mrs. Burt (Sydney), and Mrs.
Robertson (Grantown, Scotland), are
the only living members of deceased's
family. To the sorrowing children
the sympathy of a large circle of
friends is extended. The funeral will
take place this morning.
