BRAID.— On the 27th June, at her residence, "Braeside." Park-street, Parkville, Ann Chalmers, relict of the late Alexander Braid, beloved mother of Alexander and Annie Braid, and Mrs. P. McLen nan, aged 80 years. No flowers. North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser 3 July 1908 OBITUARY. MRS. ANN CHALMERS BRAID.- A very old resident of the North Melbourne district passed away at noon on Satur- day, in Mrs. Ann Chalmers Braid, relict of the late Mr. Alexander Braid, at the advanced age of 80 years. Mrs. Braid's vitality within a few days of her death was a matter of surprise to all who knew her, and she bore the weight of her years remarkable well. In her last ill- ness she was attended by Dr. J. H. Nattrass, who did all in his power, but her hour had come, and she passed away peacefully at her residence, " Braeside," Park-st., Parkville, as stated above. The deceased lady was born in St. Andrew's, Scotland, and arrived here unmarried in the fifties. Her wedding was celebrated in the North Melbourne Presbyterian Church, the officiating minister being the Rev. Mr. Reid, father of the Hon. G. H. Reid. Mr. and Mrs. Braid took up their residence in Baillie-st., and afterwards in Chetwynd- st.; moving over to Parkville in 1872, there being only seven houses there at that time. Mr. Braid, senior predeceased his wife by 20 years, having opened the business in Wreckyn-st.--now carried on by his son, Mr. Alexander Braid-in 1873. The late Mrs. Braid was a very active worker in connection with the Presbyterian Church, Parkville, and was one of the promoters of the recently erected and handsome ecclesiastical edi- fice on the Sydney-road, known as the College Church, and was regarded as an invaluable supporter by the late Rev. Alexander Yule - its first minister. Mrs. Braid leaves to mourn their loss a son, Mr. Alexander Braid, and two daughters, Miss Braid and Mrs. Peter McLennan. On Monday afternoon a service at the late residence of the de- ceased was conducted by the pastor of the College Church, the Rev. F. Milne,M.A., B.D., and at 6 p.m. the funeral left for the Melbourne General Cemetery, the in- terment taking place in the Presbyterian compartment, the same rev. gentleman officiating at the family grave. The pall-bearers were-Messrs: A. Haddow, senior, McIntosh. Jas. A. Howlett, D. Maxwell, W. Bradshaw and G. Bertram. The arrangements were carried out by T. H. Allison, of 307 Victoria-st., West Melbourne. |
