Newcastle Chronicle 15 Nov 1870
MAITLAND.
From Saturday's Mercury.
Death by drowning — Our Locninvar cor
respondent informs us that a man named Robert
Collard, in the employ of Mr. Warner, of
Knockfin, near Lochinvar, was drowned in the^
Hunter River on Monday evening last, about
six o'clock. He was shafting a dray down the
bank of the river, on to a temporary punt that is
used for the purpose of crossing the river, then
some feet high in fresh. There were two men
behind the dray to steady it down, but by some
means the dray appears to have got the better of
them, although it is not quite clear how such an
accident with care should have occurred. How
ever, the dray and the man in front went into
the river, where, after a considerable time, Col
lard came to the surface,; and. commenced pad
dling with his hands, his head being scarcely out
of the water, trying to reach the bank, which he
was unable to accomplish, not being able to
swim.
It is said that
Collard leaves a wife and four children.
