Townsville Daily Bulletin, 07 Aug 1945 (Tue.), p. 2. Entire column article DEATH OF MR. A. S. McNAUGHT Mr. Arthur Stanley McNAUGHT, manager of the Townsville branch of the Australian Estates Co., Ltd., and a prominent figure in commercial and tennis circles, died in a private hospital early on Monday night after a lengthy illness. A native of Brisbane, the late Mr. McNAUGHT came to Townsville about 1910. He made an immediate impression as a tennis player and became an acquisition to the game in Townsville both as a player and administrator. Apart from the years spent with the A.I.F. in World War I, and a term of less than a year in the West for his firm, he had served the Townsville Lawn Tennis Association as secretary since its inception and the growth of the sport in Townsville owed much to his enthusiasm and his organising ability. ... was formed with "Mac," as he was popularly known, ... In the commercial sphere he was highly esteemed. After returning from the first Great War, Mr. McNAUGHT went to Richmond to open a branch there for Australian Estates Ltd., remaining for ten months. Returning to Townsville he took up the position of accountant. His appointment as manager in 1926 was acclaimed both locally and in the West where he had made a wide and valuable connection. Mc. McNAUGHT was also interested in the Caledonian Association. No Scots gathering was complete without him and in his younger days was a prominent piper. Just over two years ago his health became seriously impaired but he bravely carried on until a sudden attack on Monday brought the end. Mr. McNAUGHT, who was 57, is survived by his widow and one daughter, Miss Jean, to whom the sympathy of a large circle of friends will be extended.
