IS THERE A LINK? - CHISHOLM Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton) 18 Aug 1927 THE SCOT WE KNOW. DR. CHISHOLM ROSS. The following excerpt from “ The Scottish Australasian” of November, 1913, will be read with interest, more especially when it is stated that the subject of the sketch. Dr. Chisholm Ross, is a cousin of the late Mrs. W. H. Rudd — “ This eminent nerve specialist and psychologist, although extremely modest and retiring in his disposition, is in reality a very great personality and ono whom all good citizens should delight to honour. “ His genealogy goes far back to- wards the morning of time, and is in- separable from, and is bound up with that of the Earls of Hoss and thr chieftainship of the Clan Aurias or Ross. At this point may we refer to the salient features of the medieval history of the old clan. The 5th Earl of Ross died in 1372, and his daughter married a Leslie of Boquhan, who as- sumed the title of Earl of Ross, but on the failure of the male line the chiefship of the clan went to the Rosses of Balnagowan. In 1711 David Ross, of “ that ilk,” was the last of that line, and seeing this he disposed of his estates to Lord Ross of Hawk- head (near Paisley), who, however, was no relative. The chieftainship of the clan on David Ross’s death went to the Rosses of Pitcalnie. In 1788 the Chief of Pitcalnie made a direct claim for the Earldom of Ross, but for some cause the petition to the House of Lords was not properly discussed. It is true that the Rosses of Balnagowan did likewise set up a rival claim, and this may have been the cause of delaying the discussion. Professor Skene, and also Sir George Ross, of Balnagowan, were satisfied that the claims of the Pitcalnie family cannot be set aside, and the heir to the chieftainship of Pitcalnie was Andrew Ross, grandfather, and after him Colin Ross, his son, the father of “ The Scot We Know,” who is, therefore, entitled to the high honour of wearing the triple eagle’s feather in his bonnet — the symbol of a High- land Chief. “ The grandfather of Dr. Ross (An- drew Ross) was born at Dingwall, and he, with his wife — Margaret Chisholm — who was born in Rossshire — and his five sons, all typical Highlanders, sailed from Cromarty, on the Pentland Firth, in the crazy little barque Asia, and ar- rived in Sydney in 1836, after a long voyage, the miseries of which would scarce be credited if told. The eldest son of the doughty Highlander, Colin, became the father of the subject of these remarks. On arrival the whole family went to Parramatta, then the seat of Government. The father, having later secured an appointment in a mer- cantile business, the family set sail in a small ketch for Port Macquarie, then an important convict settlement, 200 miles north of Sydney, where they re- mained for some years. Here the family became inured to the primitive ways of bush life and its many hardships and dangers. In 1831, the grandfather hav- ing received a better appointment, the family removed to Glen Innes, a com- mercial centre then formed on the high plateaux of New Zealand. Here Mrs. Ross died, and here her eldest son married Rosamah Brown in August, 1831. Both of these healthy young people had ambitions, both knew the hardships, and were acquainted with bush life, and were determined to face the difficulties and privations of those who extend the confines of civilisation. Meanwhile Andrew Ross and his family removed from Glen Innes to Broad- meadows station, pleasantly situated on the eastern slope of the granite ranges. This station is now successfully worked by a MacDonald from South Uist, Outer Hebrides. “ After a few years’ residence here the Rosses removed to the district near Rockhampton, in Queensland, where they acquired much land, and here An- drew Ross died. Colin Ross remained with his young wife in New Zealand, and of this happy union of active and kindred hearts, ten children were born, of whom Dr. Ross was the fourth, al- though the second eldest son.” |
