Obituary.
Though the news of the death of
Dr. Edward Elphick, L.R.C.P., London,
did not come as a surprise to
Collie people, it being well-known
that he had been in a precarious
state of health for some time past,
still it created a feeling of deep, regret when it became known on Tuesday
afternoon last. The deceased
gentleman who came from Glenelg,
S.A., to the West in the early,
Goldfields days was well and favourably
known all over the fields,
particularly at Norseman, Boulder,
and Kalgoorlie. It is about three
years since he came to Collie in a
very bad state of health, having
fallen away, as the result of severe
illness, from a 14 stone man to a
mere shadow. He never recovered,
and has been declining gradually
ever since until his demise, at the
age of 59 years, on Tuesday afternoon.
Dr. Elphick was a successful
medical man with a good record.
He was largely interested in Freemasonry,
-being a Past Master, and
on the Goldfields was a most active
and enthusiastic member of the
craft. At Norseman he was a lay
reader and conducted services in his
tent in connection with the Anglican
Church as far back as 1895.
Dr. Elphick leaves a widow and a
grown-up family of eight. The funeral
ceremony took place on Wednesday
afternoon, the customary Masonic
rites being observed by the
members of the Pioneer Lodge.
There was a very large attendance
by the special train which left
Collie at 4.15, and the coffin was
covered with some beautiful floral
tributes expressive of a sincere and
widespread sympathy for the relatives of
the deceased. The Rev. G.
Dibgy Wilson officiated at the graveside
and the burial ceremony was
very impressive. The funeral arrangements
were carried out by
Messrs. Schumann and Smith.
