Christian and Soren Mikkelsen's story.
Richard is my 4th cousin, we only found each other 2 months ago....
Richard.-
“How did Mikkelsen's end up in Australia. For a Dane, that is an unusual immigration pattern”??

Jeff.-
The mikkelsen migration to Australia probably all started with the 1848 –1851 Schleswig-Holstein war,
Soren (Charles) the elder brother of Christian Jensen Michelsen was conscripted into the navy as a ships carpenter,
After the war the family name changed from Michelsen to Mikkelsen which sounded more Danish,
The ongoing tension as a result of the war probably encouraged Soren to look for a calmer location to make his way in life,
So Soren continued as a sailor for a few years and told his family he was going to the Californian gold rush but news of the new gold rush in Australia must of changed his mind, we are not sure if this was after going to America or not, and he arrived in Australia in 1855 at the port of Geelong, as did many other Danes around this time.

“Due to labor shortages in Australa early on any fit person was well paid and a new arrival could make a good start in their new homeland, wages were higher in Australia than in North America”

Soren (Charles) worked as a carpenter in many locations building farm sheds at Bachus Marsh and installing mining machinery at Maldon and must of thought life looked good in Australia, as he wrote back to his brother Christian who boarded the ship “Shoresbury” in England and arrived in Australia in 1857, We do not know where Christian had been before leaving England.
Christian worked on the construction of the Melbourne to Sandhurst (Bendigo) railway, and later on used packhorses to cart supplies to the miners at the Broken river gold rush, on the Dargo High Plains in the Victorian Alps.
They both went to New Zealand for a couple of years, but returned to Victoria where they selected 80 acres of farm land each at Moolort, they probably chose this area because of the large amount of mining activity, In later years 5 deep lead gold mines were in sight from this farm, and the mining township of Moolort North was only 2 miles away, and Carisbrook 8 miles, Baringhup 6 miles, so any produce they grew on the farm had a ready market near by,
In the coming years they purchased the surrounding land including the land of Mr Spotiswood to the west, until they had the entire 640-acre block with a road around it.
Christian met and Married Janet Allan from Haddington Scotland (Janet’s mother was a Sinclair from Aberlady Scotland) and they lived and raised their five children
(John 1875, Annie 1877, Elizabeth 1879, David 1882, Lena 1887.)
in the house that Mr Spotiswood had built. As it was a larger and better house than the small one Soren (Charles) and Christian had built and lived in as bachelors,
Soren was also engaged to a local lady, and expanded the original house and planted a garden, but she broke the engagement off, and Soren was so heart broken that he never married.
More land was later purchased at Baringhup to the north,
But tragedy struck in 1898 when the eldest son of Christian and Janet, JOHN was killed in an accident where he was ran over by bolting horses and a wagon, this left the younger son David Sinclair Mikkelsen, (my grand father) to take on the running of the farm.

Due to the second Schleswig-Holstein War, Soren and Christian had lost contact with their sisters back in Ballum, it was only in 1905 that Christian managed to send his sisters a letter, telling them of his life in Australia including the death of his son John in 1898 and his brother Soren in 1902 and the Marriage of his daughters,
His sister “Ane Margrethe” replied to his letter, and my cousin Helen still has the reply letter, now over 100 years later,
But it was only 2 years ago that I managed to find some one back in Denmark that could translate the letter that was written in Old Danish in an old style of handwriting with a German influence.
So we now know what she wrote to him.
She was unhappy that it had been so long with no contact and that they had gone so far away, if they had gone to America as planed the sisters would probably have also left Ballum and joined Soren and Christian there.

In early 1908 Lena received a letter from Cousin Daisy Allan in Scotland telling the family that John Allan, Janet’s brother had died in 1907, a few months later in July 1908 Christian died only a few years after getting back in contact with his sisters, and in Sept 1909 his sister Christiane died.

David Sinclair Mikkelsen (Son of Christian and Janet) Married Alice May Neilson (Nielsen) and had six children. Alice’s father (Neil “Niel”) was from Denmark in the south east of the country at Hårlev.
