The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate 15 Nov 1938
DEATH OF PROMINENT
NARROMINE CITIZEN
Mr. Jeremiah W. Smith
MAYOR FOR SIX TERMS
Narromine has lost one of its most
public-spirited citizens. Jeremiah
William Smith, Mayor of the town for
six consecutive terms, died early yes
terday morning after a lengthy ill
ness. A man who took his public
responsibilities seriously, he will be
Mr. Smith was born at Peak Hill 63
years ago, and had been a resident of
Narromine since 1904. He was a
member of the first Council after the
proclamation of the municipality, then
retired from public life until he again
was elected to the Council in 1920.
Since then he had been in office con
tinuously, and was Mayor for six con
secutive terms. On account of his ill
ness he resigned as Mayor some
months ago, but continued his alder
manic duties.
He closely identified himself with
any movement designed to advance
the town of his adoption, and during
his terms as Mayor particularly did
much good for the municipality. It
was due to his efforts that grants were
obtained for municipal baths and
saleyards, two of the town's best as
sets. It was he also who was respon
sible for the electricity undertaking
which to-day is giving such a splendid
service to the community.
WORKED FOR ALL
Mr. Smith was popular with all sec
tions of the community, for in carry
ing out his public duties he recognised
neither class nor creed, his actions be
ing influenced only by the merit or
the case placed before him. Men ol
this type are pillars of strength in a
country town, and he will be missed
by all sections, who had learned to
appreciate his worth.
He was accordcd a civic funeral at
Narromine this morning. All business
houses were closed from 10.45 to 11.30,
and the cortege was one of the longest
ever seen at Narromine. The Rev.
E. H. Ellis officiated at the graveside,
and the Masonic service was read by
the Wor. Master (Bro. Mills).
Aldermen acted as pall-bearers.
The chief mourners were his widow;
daughter, Mrs. W. Tresider; and son,
Mr. . A. W. Smith (Trangie), to whom
sincere sympathy is extended.
The mortuary arrangements were
carried out by W. Larcombe & Sons,
ot Dubbo.
