PORT NEILL.
Jan. 26.
SHOCKING FATALITY.
Port Neil has been moved to its deepest depths by the sudden termination of a most promising life. Bruce Beaty aged 14 years and 5 months who was engaged by Messrs Smith and Timms on the Darke's Peak Railway between 40 and 50 miles from Carrow, was sent out on Sunday morning last in a spring cart to remove some planks and barrows, from the line. As he did not arrive at the required destination, suspicion was aroused, and Frank Congdon, who was on his way to his mate's camp, was horrified to find deceased lying under the shaft of the dray. The shaft was resting on his neck, and the body was jammed in between the rump of the horse and the front of the dray. The horse which was down, was bleeding from the mouth, and was on top of the unfortunate victim. It appears as if the planks which are 20 ft. long reached up to horse's head, had swayed, by the bumping, on the rough stumpy ground, had struck the horse on the head, stunning him, and knocking him down. The spring cart was overturned. The deceased was quite dead when found. The glass case of his watch was found broken by the father on his arrival at the scene of the accident. The watch had stopped at a quarter to nine, the body being found at 9.30 a.m. The grief stricken father after riding fifty miles conveyed the sad news on Monday morning to the mother and family at Carrow. Mounted Constable Orr of Tumby Bay on being informed, came to Carrow, made all necessary enquiries, and upon information from that officer Mr Robert Kemp J.P. Coroner, deemed an inquest unnecessary. Great sympathy is felt for Mr and Mrs Beaty and family in the loss of their son and brother. Bruce was loved by all. His kind and thoughtful dis-position made him a general favourite.
The body was interred in the Carrow cemetery this morning at ten o'clock.
