Cairns Post 12 Sept 1910
A PIONEER GONE
With the death of Mr. George
James Boulter, father of Mr. G. J.
Boulter, Cairns Land Commissioner,
which occurred at Bowen some days
ago, there is removed another of the
connecting links of early day Queens-
land. The late Mr. Boulter was
born in England in 1837, and was
educated at Bath College. At the
age of 13 he entered the navy as a
midshipman, subsequently joining the
merchant service, and visiting vari-
ous parts of the world. It was
during this time that Mr. Boulter
assisted in the crushing of the
slave parties on the African coast.
In the early fifties he gave up the
sea and came to Victoria, visiting
Ballarat, Bendigo, Mount Black-
wood and other places as a miner.
Afterwards he abandoned these pur-
suits, and came to New South Wales
with Cox Bros., taking up the
country now known as the Dubbo
stock centre. From there, accom-
panied by Mr. A. H. Wilmington, he
came to Port Denison, with the first
large draft of cattle to stock Mr. F.
S. E. Holt's Salisbury Plains Sta-
tion, outside Bowen. This was in
1864, and here he decided to settle
and carried on business as an auc-
tioneer. His family consists of
8 boys and two girls, all of whom
are living, the present Cairns Land
Commissioner being the eldest son.
At the time of his death the late
Mr. Boulter had reached the ripe
age of 73 years, and towards the
end suffered with pneumonia, which
was the cause of his demise.
