Personal Notes:

From County Cork to Quambatook by Louisa Gibson Melbourne, in the year 1852, was not prepared for the influx of migrants who were arriving at the rate of 250 a day. With "gold fever" running at a high pitch, the arrival of a young Irish girl was of no consequence. Not even important enough to have her name and age recorded for future reference. 18 year old Ellen Gregory had come, without family or friends, from her birthplace in County Cork, Ireland. With the horrendous sea journey overm her next goal was to reach Gisborne, where she was to take up a position as a domestic servant at an Inn. With few personal belongings and even less money, the practical thing for Ellen to do was walk, so she make her way on foot to her first place of employment, a distance of 35 miles. Many new arrivals were unprepared for the life that faced them in the Australian bush not so Ellen, for though her wealth was minimal, she had been endowed with great personal courage, determination and a strong Catholic faith. It is not known how long Ellen remained in her employment at Gisborne. When we next hear of Ellen, the dark-haired Irish girl of slim build and medium height, she was a house servant at Spring Creek, near Warrnambool. It was here, when aged 25 years, that she met the 30 year old farmer who was to become her husband. ELLEN GREGORY, daughter of Partick Gregory and Ellen McCormack was married on 3.11.1859 by Dean Thomas Slattery at the Roman Catholic Schoolhouse, Warrnambool, to JOHN GOOD, the son of Edward Good and Annie Ballard. Witnesses were Edward Good and Mary Anne Foy. Both John and Ellen were born in County Cork, Ireland, where their fathers were farmers. Of Ellen's family, we know that a brother followed her to Australia, married and had a son Jack, who was farming at Sea Lake in the Mallee. (See John Good's story for details of their married life) Ellen Good, in the last years of her life, maintained her great love of the outdoors and when the menfolk were busy sowing or harvesting crops she was known to drove her sheep for miles as they grazed on the natural grasses on the roadside. Young grandsons sometimes accompanied her and experienced the pleasures of "camping out" for two or three nights.
