DEATH OF MR. J.H HINSCHEN.
We take the following from “ The Proserpine Guardian of Saturday last: -
At about 8.30 on Thursday night, John Henry Hinschen, one of our well respected citizens, after a long suffering illness, passed away at the age of 54 years. The late Mr Hinschen was a man who took a keen interest in the welfare of this district and he has been closely connected with most of the local bodies. His life’s work has been of great assistance to this town and his energies were always directed to the advancement of Proserpine. His funeral, which moved from his residence at 4 o’clock yesterday, after noon, was a very large one, and the number of wreaths that were placed at the graveside only went to show their esteem in which he was held. The Citizen’s Band, of which body the late Mr Hinschen was President, was in attendance and the Band marching ahead of the hearse, played the "Dead March." A large number of members of the Oddfel ows’ Lodge were also in attendance. Rev. S. Mackay (Presbyterian, Church) read the burial service at the graveside.
The late J. H. Hinschen was well-known in this district, especially by the old hands. He was one of the little band of settlers that went from the Upper Don to grow cane at Proserpine when the mill was first initiated. His parents and other settlers of the Upper Don were engaged in maize growing, the maize being kept in tanks until the price was good. He was one of the sports of the Upper Don, who banded together under the name of the Don Whalers and made themselves felt at our sports meetings in the old days. He married Miss Emily Meizner, of this District, who survives him, leaves a grown up family. The late Johnny Hinschen was a sterling chap in every way and his comparatively early death will be greatly regretted by many friends in this district

Daily Mercury (Mackay) 3 March 1926
Proserpine is very much the poorer
by the loss of one of its most noted
citizens in the person of the late John
Henry Hinschen. Mr. Hinschen, with
three brothers, settled in Proserpine in
1894. Previous to their arrival they
were engaged in procuring sleepers and
bridge timber for the Bowen and Towns-
ville railway then being laid. Proser-
pine, had very few settlers then, so that
Mr. Hinschen can truly be called one
of its pioneers. ……………..

OBITUARY.
NORTH QUEENSLAND'S OLDEST
RESIDENT.
The passing of Mrs. Christina Meiz
ner on Sunday last at the age of 98
years, removed from our midst one
who has lived in the Bowen district
since the year after its first settle
ment, and who was without doubt
North Queensland's oldest resident.
The late Mrs. Meissner was born in
Poland on Christmas Eve 1838 and
after her marriage to Carl Meizuer.
came to Australia in the sailing ship
Lar-a-Shelli, landing at Bowen in
Bowen in 1802. The township then
consisted of one building, the Customs
House, and a number of tents. Liquor
was sold, but before being consumed
it had to be tasted by the Pidice,- one
of whom was father of the late Alex.
Lloyd, of Invorooua. The couple trav
elled to Strathmore Station by bullock
team the same year, when that station
was in its foundation stage soon after
being taken up by the late Edward
Cunningham. They had then one
child, and during the voyage out an
other was born, which died at sea.
The couple later worked at Havilah
Station, which was also in its embryo
stage. Then about sixty years ago
they returned to Bowen, where Carl
Meizner and his eldest son selected
land on the Upper Don and grew
maize, which they tanked for better
prices. Mrs. Meizner, like all the
true pioneer women, kept the home
fires burning by running a dairy with
others of the growing family and sup
plied the town with milk, twelve to
fifteen cows being milked daily. They
raised a family of thirteen children
and their descendants today include 55
grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren
and 33 great-great-grandchildren. For
over thirty years this fine couple lived
and worked their property on the Don,
retiring about 20 years ago. Carl Meiz
ner passed away only a year later, and
since then "Grannie.” as the old lady
was affectionately known, had resided
at the old home, showing that, the
hard pioneering life bred stayers by
retaining all her faculties and watch
ing her years multiply until the cen
tury mark was in sight. Full of ener
gy until her short illness during last
year she proved her enduring qualit
ies when a fall resulted in a broken
arm. She bravely bore, the pain for
four days until a neighbour obtained
medical aid, and did not make a sound
during (be painful treatment of the
Injured member, which was swollen to
several times its normal size. This
ordeal, however, took its toll and but
for its harmful effects she would have
reached her hundredth birthday, an
age she greatly hoped to achieve. A
more perfect example of the finest type
of the nation’s pioneers could not be
found to excel her in the good qualities
of unbounded energy, endurance and
cheerfulness in the face of adversity.
She fought the battle of life with a
smile through many chequered years
and leaves the example of her indom
itable spirit for the coming generations
to ponder on. She will be long remem
bered by all who knew her, and their
sympathy goes out to her surviving
son, Mr. Fred Meizner and four
daughters, Mrs. Drinkwater (Kelsey
Creek), Mrs B. Hiuschen (Proserpine)
Mrs. G. Dayes (Mareeba) and Mrs. C.
Cameron (Bowen). The funeral
left the residence of Mrs. M. Newman
at 5 p.m. on Monday, Rev. T. H. Pren
tis performing the last sad rites at the
graveside.
