A PIONEER GONE
With the death of Mr. George
James Boulter, father of Mr. G. J.
Boulter, Cairns Land Commissioner,
which occurred at Bowen some days
ago, there is removed another of the
connecting links of early day Queens-
land. The late Mr. Boulter was
born in England in 1837, and was
educated at Bath College. At the
age of 13 he entered the navy as a
midshipman, subsequently joining the
merchant service, and visiting vari-
ous parts of the world. It was
during this time that Mr. Boulter
assisted in the crushing of the
slave parties on the African coast.
In the early fifties he gave up the
sea and came to Victoria, visiting
Ballarat, Bendigo, Mount Black-
wood and other places as a miner.
Afterwards he abandoned these pur-
suits, and came to New South Wales
with Cox Bros., taking up the
country now known as the Dubbo
stock centre. From there, accom-
panied by Mr. A. H. Wilmington, he
came to Port Denison, with the first
large draft of cattle to stock Mr. F.
S. E. Holt's Salisbury Plains Sta-
tion, outside Bowen. This was in
1864, and here he decided to settle
and carried on business as an auc-
tioneer. His family consists of
8 boys and two girls, all of whom
are living, the present Cairns Land
Commissioner being the eldest son.
At the time of his death the late
Mr. Boulter had reached the ripe
age of 73 years, and towards the
end suffered with pneumonia, which
was the cause of his demise.

THE PASSING OF ANOTHER
VERY OLD RESIDENT.
Again it is our sad duty to chren
icle the passing of another of ous
very old, well known and respected
residents in the person of (Mrs)
Katherine Madeley Boulter, relict of
the late G. J. Boulter, which took
place at the Hospital on Thursday
morning last, at the ripe old age of
75 years and 9 months. The late
Mrs Boulter had been blind for the
past seven years but her wonderful
patience and bright kindly nature
helped her to battle through that
terrible experience and she was al
ways cheerful, even in her last
hours her end being peaceful..
Before the funeral, which was
well attended; left for the ceme
tery, a service was, held in the
Church of England at 4.30 o’clock, ’
Rev. Robertson afterwards perform
ing the last sad rites at the grave
side. Seventy years ago the late
Mrs Boulter came to the country
with her parents, the late Mr and
Mrs Hughes, who ware noted for
the wonderful ointment they manu
factured and was married in Bowen
and resided here ever since, for the
greater part of the time at Rich
mond, Don River, where she was
famed for her open hearted hospital
ity and callers were always made,
welcome in'the good old style, there
being always something in the cup-
board. She had a wonderfully re
tentive memory right up to the last ;
and could,remember historical
events that happened great num
bers of years ago.'In the year 1911
at the time of the King’s Coronation
she went to England with her son
Walter, visited a sister, in Man
chester and brought back a wonder
ful store of information about the
trip that was most interesting to
anyone who cared to hear it.
She reared a family of eight
sons and two daughters, her husband -
having predeceased , her 14 years
ago, and leaves seven sons and
two daughters —John, Walter (Syd
ney), James (Sydney), Hilton, Edgar,
Clement and Victor, Mrs Opllinson
(Edmonton, Cairns) and Mrs P.
Sheen (Collinsville), 25 grand-
children, and two sisters, Mrs Austin
and Mrs Fitzalan. ;
