DEATHS.
EVANS.—On June 27, at Levuka, Fiji, George Boyes, eldest son of G. F. Evans, of Hobart Town.
Note 6: Daily Telegraph (Launceston) 16 July 1895
HOBART, Monday.
The hand of death has claimed another old colonist, in the person of George Francis Evans, who died suddenly at his residence,
Sandy Bay, at 4.30 o'clock this morning, aged 87 years.
The deceased was born at Cardiff, South Wales, and was educated in France. He received an appointment from the Home Government in connection with the Commissariat Department in Tasmania, then Van Diemen's Land, arriving in the colony during the twenties. From the Commissariat Department he was transferred to the Customs in December, 1833, but this position he relinquished on going into business as a wine and spirit merchant. Subsequently he took up the position of Customs agent somewhere during the fifties, and continued in this capacity till the time of his death. In September, 1879, he was appointed Usher of the Black Rod in the Legislative Council, the duties of which he discharged with becoming dignity, and was present at the meeting
of that Chamber on Friday last.
Deceased married Miss Faulkiner, by whom he had several sons and daughters. She having died he married Mrs Swifte, formerly of Campbell Town, who still survives him, and by whom he had no issue.
Deceased was regarded as one of the oldest Freemasons in the colony.
