Maitland Mercury 14 Feb 1860
Death from the Cumberland Cattle Disease.-On the fifth instant, Mr James Turner, of Halls Creek, came to his death in a very short period from this malignant disease The following are the particulars A flock of fat sheep travelling to market camped in his stockyard, when one of the sheep was reported by the shepherd as being smothered the shepherd advised Mr Turner to skin the sheep, as it was very fat. This Turner did, and when the sheep was skinned, observing it to be excellent mutton, he resolved to salt it for use. While chopping up the sheep he wounded himself slightly In the right hand with one of the bones, but thought nothing of It at the time-the wound being so very trifling. After salting the mutton, however, he complained of pain In the hand and arm, which rapidly extended to the shoulder, producing a swelling under the arm The pain then extended down the side with great rapidity, causing a difficulty in breathing. The pain continuing, and Mr Turner becoming rapidly worse, Dr Thornton, of Muswellbrook, was sent for on the Monday following, but Mr Turner died on that day, and Dr Thornton, learning on his way that he was dead, did not proceed, but re traced his steps. It appears remarkable that In a case of this nature no inquest should have been held The matter requires explanation, which Dr. Thornton, as coroner, is probably able and willing to afford. An inquiry into a case of this kind might prove very useful to the community, in the way of putting them on their guard against this dreadful complaint Mr Turner we understand, has left a wife and nine children to deplore their loss
Died leaving a wife and nine children!!

DEATH OF MRS. MARY COWLES
Mrs. Mary Cowles died at the residence of
her daughter, Mrs. P. H. Fountain, 16 Junc-
tion-street, Marrickville, on Friday night.
She celebrated her hundredth birthday about
seven weeks ago.
The late Mrs. Cowles was a native of In-
verness, Scotland, and was 21 years of age
when she arrived in Sydney. She was twice
married, her first husband being the late Mr.
Turner, of Merriwa. Her second husband
died just before the war. Thirteen of her
grandsons served at the front, and one was
killed. The eldest of her living children resides
at Mackay, Queensland, and is 74 years of age.
There are 97 descendants, the oldest of the
great-grandchildren being 21 years of age.

THE LATE MRS. COWLES.
NINETY-SEVEN DESCEDANTS
ALIVE.
Mrs. Mary Cowles, who died last
night at the residence of her daught-
er, Mrs. P. H. Fountain, of 16
Junction-street, Marrickville, was
100 years and seven weeks old.
Her descendants— children, grand-
children and great grandchildren,
the eldest of the great-grand-
children being 21 years — number 97
living.
One of her sons, resident of Mac-
kay (Q.) — he used to visit his mother
every year — is 74 ; another, a resi-
dent of Woy Woy, is 73; and a
third, a resident of Coonamble, is
70.
Mrs. Fountain, the daughter, is
65, and she has a brother, living at
Rockdale, who is 62.
The late Mrs. Cowles, who was
born at Inverness (Scotland) was
married twice. Mrs. Fountain and
her younger brother are of the se-
cond marriage.
Arriving in Sydney by the sailing
ship James Gibb — her 21st birthday
was celebrated during the voyage —
deceased was married two years
later to the late Mr. Turner, who
kept the Traveller's Rest Hotel at
Hall's Creek, near Merriwa. Her
second husband died just before the
Great War.
Of 13 of her grandsons who served
at the war, one who was the thir-
teenth to enlist, was killed. All
the others returned safely, though
several of them had received serious
wounds in action.
The late Mrs. Cowles attributed
her longevity and general good
health to regular living and freedom
from worry. Until two years ago,
when her eyesight began to fail, she
never used glasses. Yet she was a
diligent reader, her favorite book
being the Bible. She almost knew
it by heart.
The end came suddenly. A few
hours before her death Mrs. Cowles
refused to believe that anything was
seriously wrong with her. Unknown
to her a doctor was called in. She
did not want a doctor, she said. A
little while afterwards the old lady
was dead.
