Townsville Daily Bulletin 1 May 1929
MACKAY MURDER CASE.
Charge Against Gordon.
MACKAY April 30.
Charles Henry Horton Gordon was
to-day committed for trial at the Cir-
cuit Court on June 16, on a charge of
wilfully murdering his wife, Margaret
Elisabeth Gordon, at Eton, on April 20.
Detective Acting Sergeant Kearney
gave evidence at length regarding a
visit to the house where the tragedy
occurred and bringing the accused to
the Mackay watchhouse, where later
he interviewed the accused and ad-
ministered the usual caution. Accused
said he was wearing blood stained
socks and a shirt on Saturday night
in question.
Constable Harry West of Eton, de-
tailed the visit of Gordon to the Eton
Police Station when the accused said
'I am in trouble, as I have killed my
missus'. Accused said he had a row
and lost his temper and killed her on
the farm. He said he hit her with a
stone and then flung it at her.
He said he hit her with a
brick till she stopped screaming. She
said "Don't. Don't hurt me." He hit
her till she stopped. This happened
about an hour after his son and daugh-
ter went to the pictures. A lamp be-
came overturned and the kerosene ran
over her, catching her alight. He put the
fire out with some water. She accused
him of being too friendly with other
women at Eton and he got wild and
lost his temper. There was also an
argument with his son to sell the farm,
which worried him. He wanted his son
to break the agreement.
Several other witnesses were ex-
amined but no new facts were elicited
and accused was committed for trial.
