Burial Buried or Lost at Sea

Brisbane Courier 14 March 18178
A CORRESPONDENT writing from the Lower Burdekin, under date February 22, says : A very sad affair happened last Tuesday, by which a young man named George Porter, who was carrying on this industry at one of the selections above referred to, was suddenly cut off, leaving a young wife and two children. A boy about 14 years old, whom it seems the Porters had adopted, also lost his life at the same time. It appears from what I can gather that Porter being short of beef took the boy with him, intending to shoot some game for their dinner. It is supposed that he shot a duck, and that the boy, after taking his clothes off, went into the lagoon for the bird, and either became entangled in the weeds, or got out of his depth. It is evident, at any rate, that Porter went hurriedly to the lad's assistance without waiting to undress, and it is also plain that he was unable to reach the poor boy, as the bodies were recovered some hours afterwards by the blacks a short distance from each other. It is a melancholy thing ; he had only lately started the dairy, and by hard work had just got all in order and was evidently in a fair way of making a good living and providing comfortably for the future. The greatest sympathy is felt for his poor wife, who seems almost broken-hearted. A magisterial enquiry was held by Mr. R. W. Graham, J.P., and the bodies were interred on the day following their deaths. Mr. Graham, although at so short a notice, had substantial coffins made, and himself read the burial service. It is somewhat strange, in connection with the above, that just four years ago a brother of the deceased George Porter was taken by an alligator whilst standing on the bank of a lagoon.
