OBITUARY
Mr. A. Haines
Mr. Albert Haines, sen., who died at
the Thyne Memorial Hospital recently
at the age of 89, was born at Alderbury,
Wiltshire, on July 10, 1846. Mr. Haines
came to Australia with his parents In
1850. His father, the late Mr. James
Haines, took up land at Nairne, where
Albert, at the age or eignt, learnt to
drive bullocks and to handle a plougn.
While still in his teens, he came to
Millicent and Mount Gamibier in a bul-
lock dray, accompanied by an elder
brother. They carried out a fencing
contract at Rocky Camp, near Millicent,
before going on to Monbulla station.
At the age of 19 he started a career as
a wheelwright, learning his trade from
Mr. George Duck Wyatt, and later
working for the late Mr. William Clay-
field, of Millicent. In 1870, he married
Miss Eliza Wyatt, a daughter of his
employer, and was the first mayor of
Mount Gambier. There were ten chil-
dren (of whom five sons and two daugh-
ters — Messrs. A. J. (Mount Gambier) , G.
L. (Millicent), R..T. (Mount Gambier),
H. D. W. (Sandy Waterhole, Victoria),
and W. W. V. Haines (Drik Drik. Vic
toria), and Mrs. G. Little (Mumbannar),
and Mrs. J. Cram (Mount Gambier) are
living. He is also survived by his
widow. The funeral services were con-
ducted by Captain Thompson, of the
Salvation Army, with which Mr. Haines
was associated for 50 years.

The Narracoorte Herald 24 April 1936
OBITUARY.
MR. ALBERT HAINES.
Mount Gambier, April 16.
Mr. Albert Haines, one of the dis-
trict's oldest remaining pioneers and
a colonist of 85 years, died at the
Thyne Memorial Hospital, Millicent,
on Tuesday, following a short illness.
In another two months Mr. Haines
would have attained the age of 90
years, having been born in 1846 at
Willshire. He came to Australia
with his family at the age of four,
landing at Port Adelaide. He lived
in the Nairne and Mount Barker dis-
tricts for some years, first coming to
Mount Gambier in 1863. After some
years of station life he became ap-
prenticed to his father-in-law, the
late Mr. George Duck Wyatt, in the
wheelwright business. He then went
to Horsham for a short time, and then
to Bairnsdale, Gippsland. On re-
turning to this district he conducted
a wheelwright's business for Mr. Clay-
field at Millicent, and afterwards
spent four years at Rendelsham. His
next move was to Lake Leake, where
he held the property on which the
original Glencoe station homestead
was built. Leaving there in 1907 he
took up land at Sandy Waterhole, on
the Glenelg River, and left there in
1924 to live at Yahl. The last three
years of his life were spent at Milli-
cent, where he became ill only a few
days before his death, having enjoyed
good health all his life. Mr. Haines
had a varied and interesting career.
He knew Mount Gambier when what
is now the main street was little more
than a quagmire, and he had seen
bullock drays bogged in it. He was
married 64 years ago to Miss Eliza
Wyatt, and the diamond wedding was
celebrated. The following family
survives:— Messrs. Albert, Mount
Gambier; Lewis, Millicent; Ralph,
Mount Gambier; Hamlet, Sandy
Waterhole; Wallace, Drik Drik; Mes-
dames George Little, Mumbannar; and
John Cram, Gambier Forests. One
daughter died in Tasmania, and a son
was killed in the last war. Mr.
Haines joined the Salvation Army
when that organisation first became
established in Mount Gambier, and
remained a member for the rest of his
Ife.
