OBITUARY.
MR. HENRY KEOUGH.
HERBERTON, February 8
The death of Mr. Henry Keough, of
"Bell View," Evelyn, at the great age
of 86 years, marks the passing of the
last of the original selectors of that
district, and removes a most pic-
turesque personality. Born at New
Ross, County Wexford. Ireland, he was
an only child of an old Irish family: his
mother dying when he was very young,
he came to Australia at an early age
on a sailing ship, the Sheener, the
journey round the Cape was long and
rough. From Brisbane he first went
to Logan River and was employed at
Agiston, near Beenleigh; later going to
Mackay, where he worked for the
C.S.R. in the Homebush sugar mill.
Moving still northward he was em-
ployed at Maidavale (Ayr district) by
Dr. McBernie. the owner of that sugar
plantation and later transferred to
Pioneer to work as a field overseer for
the late John Drysdale. Here he mar-
ried Miss Kate Stanley, and two years
later the young couple with an infant
came overland past the Valley of
lagoons, the trip taking six months.
At Scrubby Creek (near Nyleta) he
purchased cows from the late Mr. Bob
Gordon, and moved to Evelyn. Here
he acquired a fine selection 52 years
ago and his home. "Bell View" is one
of the highest private residences in
Queensland. The Keough dairy here
soon became well known, its progeny
being the foundation of many neigh-
bouring herds, whilst dairy butter
made by Mrs. Keough, under the then
primitive conditions of cooling and
refrigeration, was packed in cool mul-
berry leaves and linen cloth and trans-
ported by pack-horse to distant min-
ing fields like Irvinebank and Mont-
albion. The late Henry Keough was
a man of great vision: he forty years
ago foresaw the days when timber
would be scarce and valuable: and
whilst Governmental policy of that
day was clamouring for the clearing
of scrub and putting the land into agri-
cultural or dairying productivity, he
considered that the continued growth
of its native timber was the land's
most valuable production and deplored
its destruction to grow grass - a policy
widely endorsed to-day when his re-
serves of timber are being acquired
for war purposes. This hospitable old
pioneer was a great lover of good
literature, especially poetry, and the
bush songs of the Australian poets
appealed to him. Like R. L. Steven-
son, he chose his own last resting
place. ". . . Here he lies where he
longed to be." his wish being rever-
ently carried out by his family. He was
laid to rest in a sylvan glade "'neath
the tall gum trees" on his own beloved
homeland, the pall-bearers being
descendants of his pioneer neighbours
of half a century ago and the funeral
services conducted by Rev. Bro. Tre-
gear, of the Bush Brotherhood. De-
ceased is survived by his widow, three
sons (Messrs Charles. Stanley and
Leslie, all of the Evelyn district), two
daughters (Mesdames E.Gallogly and
B. Dempsey): also 20 grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
