Yarra, and Armadale.

The Australasian (Melbourne) 17 Nov 1888
It will grieve the many friends of Mr.
Thomas N. Pugh, well known as a member
of The Argus reporting staff, to hear that he
died on Monday night, at his residence,
College Lawn, Prahran. Mr. Pugh was dis
abled in May last, by a stroke of paralysis,
when in active work. The doctors were
unable, at first, to take a hopeful view of
his condition, but he improved wonderfully,
and seemed to be gradually recovering
strength when the second stroke came,
causing death within a few hours. The
deceased gentleman was an experienced
and capable journalist. His press career
began in Queensland about 25 years ago.
Mr. Theophilus P. Pugh, his elder
brother, was then editor of the Bris
bane Courier, and a member of the Legisla
tive Assembly, filling the post of Chairman of
Committees. He is now a police magistrate in
Queensland. Mr. Thomas Pugh joined the
Courier about the year 1868, and went through
a useful training on the parliamentary staff
of that journal; so that when he came
to Victoria he readily obtained an
engagement on The Argus, after a
brief experience of editing in Kyneton.
In the course of three or four years Mr. Pugh
gave up press work to take an appointment in
the Crown Lands department, where some
new positions were created, and seemed
settled for life, but be was included among
the victims of Black Wednesday (January,
1878), and went back to journalism, a place
being found for him on The Argus staff. Mr.
Pugh was a most trustworthy Parliamentary
reporter—accurate, finished, and intelligent.
In emergencies his services were sought for
in connection with the Victorian Hansard,
and he appeared in the gallery for that pub
lication, while still keeping up his connection
with The Argus. From time to time, various
responsible duties were cast upon him in this
office, and satisfactorily performed. He acted
occasionally as relieving sub editor of The
Argus and as deputy-editor of The Austral
asian. Though he did not possess a strong
physique, the breakdown that did occur took
all his acquaintances by surprise, and caused
a deep shock, the more so as be had not yet
reached a time of life when such a seizure
seemed likely to take place. Mr. Pugh,
though of a somewhat retiring disposition,
had many friends, both among journalists
and the public men that a Parliamentary re
porter on a metropolitan journal necessarily
becomes acquainted with in the pursuit of his
useful calling. He leaves a wife (whom he
married in Brisbane) and three children.
