OBITUARY
MR. ROBERT ARMSTRONG.
There passed quietly away on Saturday morning a very old and highly respected resident of the Mackay district, Mr. Robert Armstrong, at the advanced age of 80 years. His illness extended over several months, and his funeral yesterday afternoon was attended by many friends of the family.
Born at Comragh, County Waterford, Ireland, in November, 1861, he arrived in Brisbane in the steamer Cloncurry 55 years ago. The following year he came to Mackay, and with a partner established a dairy on the late J. K. Norris's property at Baker's Creek, Dunwould, and remained there for three years supplying the Eungella gold diggings with butter.
About that time the North Eton and Racecourse central mills were built and the Hollow Estate was cut up into farms. The late Mr. Armstrong purchased a block near Boldon siding and turned his attention to sugar cane growing. The price then was 12/6 a ton of sugar cane delivered on the railway trucks. Two years later Marian mill was built, and he then supplied Marian mill until 1933. when he sold his farm to his son-in-law, Mr. D. Isbister.
During the above-mentioned period the late Mr. Armstrong was a member of the Pioneer Divisional Board for seven years. His colleagues on the board were Messrs. John Ewan, Davidson (Chalr), E. M. Long, H. J. Jane, w. H, Kirkup. M. R. Shannon, Richard Neill, M. Ready, E. Hannon, and others. He also was on the Marian mill board of directors, during which period the south side tramline and the Mount Jukes N tramline were built. He was secretary to the Marian State school committee for 20 years, and on resigning received a complimentary letter from the Under-Secretary, Department of Public Instruction, thanking him for his long and useful service. He became a member of the Independent Order of Rechabites In 1893, and was appointed a Conciliation Justice In 1933.
His only son, Lieutenant T. A, Armstrong, was killed at Paschendale, In October, 1917, and at the time of his enlistment was a 4th year medical student at the Sydney University. He left three daughters- Mrs. D. Isbister, Mackay, with whom he lived; Mrs. Alan Phelps, Mlranl; and Mrs. Roy Jones, Home Hill. His wife, who predeceased him 12 years ago, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Richard Madlll.
The service at the. Presbyterian Church, also that at the graveside, was conducted by Rev. R. Bardon, and for the Independent Order of Rechabites was read by Mr. C. S. Tait. The funeral arrangements were In the hands of Mr. A. Grant.
