Mackay lost one of its earliest pion- eers, and one who did much for the advancement of the district. The deceased, who attained the age of 71 years, was a native of Scotland. He came to Mackay about 1870 from Peak Downs, where he had been en- gaged as a carrier. Upon arrival here he pursued a similar calling, being engaged with his team between Mackay and outlying stations. Dur- ing that time he took up a selection in the neighbourhood of the Barrie Estate, Eton. About 1880 he sel- ected "Aberdeen," also in the Eton district, and engaged in cane grow- ing, which he continued up till four or five years ago, when he took up his residence in own. The deceased was one of the promoters of the North Eton Central Mill, one of the first two central mills to be erected in the district. He took an active interest in the progress of the fac- tory from its inception up to the time of his death, and occupied a seat on the directorate. Of a jovial nature the late Mr. Ironside made firm friends of all with whom he came in contact, and the news of his death will be learnt with keen regret. The deceased took ill a couple of months ago, and had been ailing ever since. He was twice married, his first wife predeceasing him 13 or 14 years ago, while his second wife, who was the relict of the late Mr. H. Langford, of Eton, survives him. He leaves a family of four, three daughters and one son. The former are Mesdames H. Robertson (Mackay), T. Wolfe (New South Wales), and T. Cowan (Mirani), while Mr. George Ironside, his son, is farming at Eton. The funeral took place yesterday after- noon, the Rev. D. Galloway officiating at the graveside.

MR. G. IRONSIDES. Mr. George Ironsides, a native of Eton and a member of a very old pioneering family, passed suddenly away at midday yesterday at the age of about 65, Deceased took a slight stroke last year and, although he rallied a little, he was never the same since. He was in town quite recently. For many years, Mr. Ironsides followed his father's occupation, farming. Twelve months ago, he disposed of his farm to his sons, but recently purchased an other farm at Eton. Deceased was twice married and leaves a wife and a large family most of whom are grown up. Mrs. Tom Cowan, Mt. Pelion, is a sister, and Mrs. J. Ferguson, of Victoria-street, is a niece.

Daily Mercury (Mackay) 28 Feb 1923 District News ETON FARMS (From Our Correspondent.) George Ironside's farm, known as the Brightly Estate, purchased by Mr. Ironside about two years ago, has been subdivided and fenced off. Forty acres of the best plant cane Mr. Iron- side ever produced and 40 acres of good first rations grown on old land that has been following for 20 years should return a good tonnage not withstanding, the present unfavourable outlook new yards and new stables have been erected, and the old Brightly homestead at the big lagoon has been improved and added to, and taken together there is a look of comfort and solidity around. Daily Mercury (Mackay) 21 May 1930 A serious, accident, an almost cer tain fatality, was narrowly avoided on Saturday afternoon by presence of mind and — luck. Mr. George Ironside, of Brightlea, Eton, was driving home, accompanied by his wife, when approaching the Juliet- street level crossing his attention was momentarily distracted, causing him to look away. On turning his eyes back to the road the rail motor loomed up before him, speeding on its way to Eton. He immediately applied the brake and brought his car to a standstill within a foot of the passing motor. Mr. Ironside; acknowledges that had an accident occurred the blame would have been his own. Daily Mercury (Mackay) 27 Feb 1931 THROWN FROM HORSE. Thrown from a horse on Wednes- day, George Ironside (58), farmer, of Brightly, suffered an injury to his right hip. The Ambulance transported him to a private hospital. Daily Mercury (Mackay) 16 Dec 1936 It was a great shock to the community when the sudden death of Mr. George Ironside of Eton . (late of Brightly) was announced. The late Mr. Ironside was speaking to a friend about midday on Friday, when he dropped dead. He had not been In the best of health for many a year, but you never heard him complaining. He was one of the oldest residents of Brightly. It was just before the crush ing that the late Mr. Ironside disposed of his farm to two of his sons, Hugh and Percy. This farm belonged tp the late Mr. Ironside's father, who will be remembered by the old people of the. district. To his sorrowing wife and family we extend our deepest sym pathy.
