day, aged 70. He was born, in

in the Indian Army. He was
educated in the Military Col-
lege at Lucknow until the fam-
ily went to England, when he
was apprenticed to the world
famous engineering firm of

led him into a colourful life
and many different positions.
He was wheat farming in Can-
ada, worked for the C.P.R. on
the Lake steamer Kootenay,
and finally came to Sydney in
1911. He soon went north to
Townsville, where he worked

ried in 1922. Miss Beatrice

tried cane farming for three
years, but gave it up in 1939

ment to Machan's Brach, where
he lived until his death, taking
