Western Argus (Kalgoorlie) 2 March 1920
OBITUARY JAMES ALEXANDER ANTILL. We regret to have to record the death of Mr. James Alexander Antill, a prominent figure in the journalistic world of Kalgoorlie for many years. The deceased gentle man had reached the ripe old age of 86 years at the time of his death, which occurred in Sydney, New South Wales, on the 20th inst. He was a man of strong personality, and he maintained throughout his long life those vigorous powers of mind that enabled him to outdistance many a younger competitor, in the journalistic field. He had a varied experience in many parts of Australia. He was the fourth son of the late Major H. C. Antill, 73rd regiment (Black Watch), who arrived in Sydney as aide-de camp to Governor Macquarie in 1808, and who in this capacity was manager of all public buildings. He it was who planted a good many of the pine trees in the Sydney Botanic Gardens, and supervised the erection of the obelisk in Macquarie-street, from which all the roads in the Colony then started. The deceased was an officer in the Union Bank at Ballarat, at the time of the Eureka riots. On returning to Sydney he joined the Australian Joint Stock Bank, proceeding to Brisbane head office, and over half a century ago he opened the first bank at Gympie. He was afterwards appointed to the Armidale branch in New South Wales, of which he was manager for 21 years. He resigned in 1895 to come to West Australia., and a couple of years later joined the staff of the "Kalgoorlie Miner." He returned to New South Wales about four years ago. Dr. Antill-Pockley, a grand-nephew, was the first Australian killed in the late war, losing his life at German New Guinea, on Septenber 11, 1914. The late Mr. Antill passed away quite peacefully and suffered no pain, being ill only a fortnight. He has left a large family of sons and daughters. Three of his sons, Messrs. H. C., A. E., and L. C. Antill, respectively, were formerly residents of Kalgoorlie.

AN OLD COLONIST.
DEATH OF MR. J. A. ANTILL.
The death of Mr. James Alexander Antill, which occurred at Brighton-le-Sands on Sunday, carries the mind back to the early his tory of the colony. Mr. Antill, who had reached the age of 85 years, was the youngest and last surviving son of Major Henry Golden Antill, who came to Sydney in 1809 as A.D.C. to Governor Macquarie, and founded a family, which has figured prominently in the affairs of the country. Major Antill was one of the party which accompanied Governor Macquarie on his journey across the Blue Mountains, when he laid out the site of the future town of Bathurst. It was after 25 years' distinguished service in the British Army, during which he served in the Peninsular War and in India, that Major Antill retired to the estate at the foot of the Mountains which had been granted to him, and which he named Picton, after General Picton, under whom he had served in the Peninsular War. There he established the picturesque homestead of Jarvisfield, which is still In the family.

Mr.J. A. Antill was one of five sons of the Major, all of whom have now passed away. After receiving his education at King's School under the Rev. Robert Forrest he entered the service of one of the banking institutions, which took him to Ballarat, and he was there at the time of the famous Eureka Stockade. For some time he was carried away by the lure of the goldfields, but returned to banking and eventually joined the stall of the "Kalgoorlie Miner" as a leader writer, in which position he continued up till four years ago, when he returned to New South Wales to live in retirement. He frequently contributed to the Press in this State, and was an authority upon chess. Two of his sisters, Mrs. Moggridge, now of England, and Mrs. Pockley, of Killara, survive him, and he has left a family of three sons and five daughters, the sons being Mr. D C. Antill, of Ashfield, and Mr. H.. C. Antill and Mr. A. E. Antill, of Perth (W.A.). He was an uncle of Brigadier General J. M. Antill, C.B., C.M.G. The funeral took place prlvately at Woronora cemetery.

On Monday, the day following the death of Mr. J. A. Antill, the death was announced to have taken place at the family homestead, Jarvisfield, Picton, of Miss Selina J. Antill. She was a daughter of the late Mr. John Macquarie Antill, and niece of the late Mr. J. A. Antill, and a slster of Brigadier-General An- till. The funeral took place yesterday at Picton, and was largely attended.
