The Late Richard James Latham
In last week's issue we referred briefly to the sudden passing from our midst of Mr Richard James Latham, a very esteemed personality for many years in the regime of Hillston and district, the exact period of his residence here being 64 years. The deceased gentleman had carried out his duties at Nall Jackson's until knock off time on the Tuesday evening, and as was his custom on the Wednesday morning, at about 6.30 a.m., he left his bed to light a fire to make the morning cup of tea. After doing so he was the victim of a seizure, and managed to return to bed, and peacefully passed away in the vicinity of 7 p.m. The late Mr Latham was born at Cork (Ireland) on 29th January, 1869, he thus being 80 years and 8 months of age. His family comprised five boys and three girls, of whom two survive, namely, Sir Charles Latham, M.L.C., and Mrs Mrs Haines, both of Perth (West Australia). He arrived in Australia 64 years ago and from that time had resided almost continuously in the Hillston district. On 17th January, 1897, he married Miss Elizabeth Smith, who pre- deceased her husband 43 years ago. Of this union three sons were the issue, viz., Richard (Town Clerk of Randwick), William (Port Kembla) and James (Tamworth), all of whom spent beyond their boyhood days at Hillston, and survive their father. In 1925, the subject of this obituary again married, his second partner being Mrs Susan Freeman. There were no children of this marriage. His second wife survives. In 1896 the late Mr Latham selected on a property known as ' Crow's Nest,' about 20 miles from Hillston, eventually giving up farming after the 1902 drought. He from thence on engaged in the forwarding and carrying trade, firstly with horses and wagons and latterly with motor lorries. As a matter of fact his activities were much too varied to go into in detail. However, in passing, it must be mentioned that 44 years he was a valued member of the outdoor staff of the firm that is now known as Nall Jackson's.
A notable detail of his boyhood days (prior to coming to Australia) was that he was a choir boy at Westminster Cathedral (London) and soloist at the age of 10. This was a distinction he was proud to recall. He retained a keen interest in Church music during the remaining years of his life.
' Dick ' Latham, by which name he was reverently known through out the town and district by old and young alike, associated himself with everything for the town and district's advancement. The bodies he worked for, without thought, of recompense, and the good he achieved in a chivalrous manner are beyond our comprehension to narrate, as he was known to the writer only over the last few years. His Church, the Masonic Lodge, Red Cross, Hospital, Comforts Fund, Ambulance and Memorial Park are but some of the public organisations he worked most energetically for. It was to be regretted that he passed away not being able to see the Park in its completion. During World War II Mr Latham devoted an immense amount of time and energy to the Red Cross and Comforts Fund. For his efforts on behalf of the former he was elected an hon Life Member. In the loss of Richard Latham our town and district has been deprived of an exemplary citizen and one whose void may never be filled in a similar manner. As stated previously it is beyond us to in- numerate details of his lengthy and well spent life. It can, however, be written that he lived a life of Christian purpose and left behind an object lesson to be learnt. The quotation : 'It matters not how long We live, but how ' is certainly applicable to the late Richard James Latham.
His body was reposed in the Church of England, from where, on Thursday afternoon, after service by Rev. F. C. Dixon, the funeral procession left for Hillston cemetery. The cortege was by far the lengthiest in the annals of Hillston, comprising 58 cars, conveying a large concourse of mourners to pay the last tribute to a ' man-amongst men ' and one who by his many attributed had endeared himself to everyone to whom he personally became associated. The last rites of his Church at the graveside were administered by Rev. F. C. Dixon, and the Masonic service was read by Wor. Master Bro. R. L. Flottmann. Pall bearers were employees of Nall Jackson's A further tribute to deceased was the vast number of beautiful floral tributes placed upon the casket. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mrs L. D. Wilson.
