Frederick Godsall Lohnson born on 5 May 1846, in St Omer, France was the fourth son of Ralph Edward Godschall Johnson and Sarah Eleanor Butler. In 1852, his mother died leaving seven children ranging in ages from 5 to 20. In 1854, Ralph sailed to Australia with his two eldest sons, Ralph and Charles. Daughters Ellen and Fanny lived with the Thornton family at the rectory at Bathingstoke while Frank, aged 10, and William, aged 5, boarded at a schoo; at Chilton, Andover, four miles away, and spent the holidays at the Rectory at Basingstoke with the Thornton household. Frederick, aged 8, was billites in Ireland with other family memners, Uncle Fred and Aunt Fanny, where he was to receive further education. Theeducation he received was Catholic, and he was expected to enter the Church, but he refused to take the vows. Ellen, Fanny, William and Frank arrived in Brisbane in August 1860 to join their father “Assistant Clerk in the Department of the Legislative Assembly”. Their father Ralph was widely known as “Gentle Johnson”, and would have retained his dignity, breeding, and good manners of a true English gentleman until the day he died, 7 July 1876. Frederick was the last of the family to come to Australia and is believed to have arrived in Brisbane about 1865. He married Margaret Isabella MacDonald, daughter of George and Elizabeth nee Dowse (of Maude, Victoria) at Cullin-la-ringo station near Springsure, the home of her sister Elizabeth (Berry) Wills. ome time after the birth of their third daughter May in 1882, the family moved to Victoria where they remained until 1904 when they moved to Western Australia. The family settled in the Bunbury district where Frederick was employed by the Governmant to inspect the timber used in Government buildings, railways, bridges etc. Frederick died at Bunbury on 17 December 1915 leaving a widow and ten children. |
