Geelong Advertiser 12 Nov 1883
DEATH OF DR FORSTER SHAW.
Another old identity of this town, Dr.
Forster Shaw, has passed away. His death
occurred on Saturday forenoon, at his
residence in Corio Terrace, opposite the
Custom House. It was not unexpected,
as during the past four or five years he
has been in failing health, and for a long
time past he has been receiving every
medical attention from Dr. Pincott. The
deceased gentleman was born at Dublin,
in November, 1809. He graduated at
Trinity College and became a pupil of Dr.
Robert Adams, and took his diploma at
the College of Surgeons, Dublin. Early
in 1840 Dr. Forster Shaw sailed for Vic
toria in the ship Coromandel, in which
vessel the late Dr. "Wilmot and his
family were passengers, Dr. Shaw
being the ship's surgeon. After
a passage of about six months
the ship arrived at Melbourne on the 10th
July of the same year. Dr. Shaw re
mained in the metropolis for four or five
months, and then came to Geelong at the
end of 1840, the only other medical man
here at that time being Dr. Clarke. The
deceased gentleman at once commenced
the practice of his profession in the
district, and continued to do so until
incapacitated by illness. In 1850 he was
appointed coroner and magistrate of the
Geelong district, and occupied the office
of coroner up to January, 1878, when the
coronerial work was handed over to the
police magistrates for performance, by the
Government of the day. The immediate
cause of Dr. Shaw's death was paralysis
of the brain. The remains of the deceased
gentleman will be interred in the Eastern
Cemetery this afternoon at four o'clock.
At the conclusion of the services at St.
Paul's church yesterday morning and
evening, the organist played the Dead
March in Saul as a mark of respect for the
memory of the late Dr Shaw, who was one
of the trustees of the church.
