Townsville Daily Bulletin 14 March 1929
The sad news of the death of Mr.
William Greenwood, was received
with deepest regret. Mr. Greenwood
had been ailing for some time and
passed peacefully away at his resid-
ence on Tuesday morning last at the
age of 76. The late Mr. Greenwood
was born at Burnley, Lancashire,
England. He started his working
career when only a lad, and at the
age of 18 was 'overlooker' in a cot-
ton factory at Burnley, which posi-
tion he held until he sailed for Aus-
tralia in 1876. Leaving England on
Xmas day on the sailing ship 'Scot-
tish Night,' he landed at Rockhampton
after 110 days voyage. He then went
to the Palmer Goldrush and was also
present at numerous other goldrushes.
From the goldflelds he went to cen-
tral West Queensland where he took
up tank and dam sinking and it was
not long before he was manager for
H. Hudson a contractor in that line.
Three Government dams, one at Mut-
taburra township and two on Mut-
taburra-Winton road were built under
his supervision. While working on
Lerida station he first met his wife
and was married at Mt. Cornish, Mut-
taburra, on September, 10 1887. He
later went to Croydon where for
some time he was engaged in mining
and then several years was hotel pro-
prietor. After his stay at Croydon,
he, with his wife and family went to
Chillagoe where he followed mining
and smelter work. The deceased
came to Proserpine in 1913, and pur-
chased 'Cricklewood' farm Glen Isla,
where be resided with his wife and
two sons Wallie and Ray, up till the
time of his death. He leaves a wife
and two daughters. Mrs. W. Long
land and Mrs, A Dolie, both of Pro-
serpine and thirteen grandchildren,
one son Arthur predeceased him
twenty years ago To the bereaved
relations heartfelt sympathy is ex
tended in their sad loss.

PROSERPINE NOTES
The passing away of one of Proser
pine's dearest old ladies in the person
of Mrs. Emily Clara Greenwood, at
her residence, Cricklewood, Glen Isla
on Wednesday, 25th September, after
a very short illness removes another
link from the older residents of Pros
erpine. The late Mrs. Greenwood was
held in high esteem, throughout the
Proserpine district and her sudden
death came as a shock to all. Her
motherly disposition was manifested
in her numerous acts of kindness, and
many will mourn her loss. The late
Mrs. Greenwood was born at Hunting
ton, Worcester, England on 23rd April
1864. On coming to Australia her
first landing place was Rockhampton,
where she resided for a short period.
The next place of residence was Ler
ida Station, where she first met her
husband, the late William Greenwood.
They were married at Mt. Cornish
Station, Muttaburra, on 10th Septem
ber, 1884, and in 1887 went to Croydon
where her husband was engaged in
mining and hotel keeping for a period
of 21 years. On the decline of the
latter place they then went to Chilla
goe where they resided for about six
years. It was in 1914 that Mr. and
Mrs. Greenwood came to Proserpine
and purchased Cricklewood farm,
which has now been held by the
Greenwood family for 21 years. Her
husband predeceased her by six years.
The deceased leaves a family of six
sons and two daughters, George,
Fred, Richmond, Percy, Wal
ter and Roy, Mrs. W. Longland and
Mrs. A. F. Dobe. Two sons, Arthur
and William predeceased her by some
years. The funeral which was very
largely attended moved from St Paul's
Church ot England. Rev. T. C. Kernke
conducted the services, both at the
church and at the graveside. A mem
orial service was held in the church
on Sunday night

Townsville Daily Bulletin 21 Jan 1925
A Croydon native who was attracted
back to the old field by the good re
ports concerning the tinfield was Mr.
George Greenwood. He has pegged
out a lease. He is being backed by a
well-known mining investor. In the
palmy days George's mother was a
licensed victualler— she ran pubs at
Croydon King and afterwards at Gold
stone. His father was a shareholder
in the Richmond and other mines. Mr.
and Mrs. Greenwood have now a sugar
farm in the Proserpine district, and
last season did very well out of his
cane. Years ago George and his father
worked a show on the Tinfield, and the
young man has always had a fancy
for that Croydon belt. Before return
ing to Bowen George intends to have
a look at a silver-lead show in the
Etherldge district that he and his
father worked many years ago. He is
of opinion that Stanhills is going to
bring about a revival in mining in
Croydon.
